"What if; what should have been? Learn the lessons lads and start to believe in yourselves. You can do it!"
Having not played for two weeks, it was like starting the season all over again, on a beautiful day at Exmouth CC, and the u14s perfomance unfortunately mirrored it. The players were more interested in catching up than the warm up and that didn't bode well for the match. Yorkshire won the toss and decided to bat. Bowl straight, no extras, don't allow any singles in the ring and field out of you skins, do the basics was the message but frustratingly, not all the time, that didn't really happen. Yorkshire A team players Barnes and Brown comfortably put on 134 for the first wicket in 24 overs before Dan Pyle, the 6th bowler used, made the break though having Brown, 53, caught by Dan Goodey. Ben Steer whose figures flattered him (they did Steery!) took the first of his 4 wickets this time having Barnes caught by Goodey for 73. 144-2. Two runs later he took another wicket caught Jake Reddick and then Jake took the next wicket when he had Walmsley LBW. 161-4.  Yorkshire then staged a recovery before Toby Codd who had the remarkable figures over the weekend of 5-0 and 5-1, took the first of his two wickets, caught Reddick 196-5, which quickly became 197-6 when he bowled Bridges. Dan Goodey who had bowled a good opening spell then took two wickets bowled and well caught by Dan Pyle, Yorkshire 224-8. The tail wagged a little before Steery finished their innings off taking two more wickets - how do you keep him out of the game -  take him off the field? Yorkshire 247 all out. At one stage it could have been 300 or even 350 but Devon did fight back and get some control. Yes we did bowl well at times, but we were not consistent enough and some of our fielding was not to the standard you have set yourselves.   Lessons need to be learned and quickly with South Africa and the 2013 season ahead of you!

Given the pitch 247 was always achievable if we batted to our potential and we had a good start, something which let's face it, we have struggled with all season. Jamie Telford after 50 overs behind the stumps was eager to take his chance and he showed the grit and determination, character, he has all season keeping, by batting for an excellent 45. Unfortunarly he lost Dan Pyle and Jake Reddick early, 9-2 in the 3rd over, but he found a slightly out of sorts Ben Green,  we can allow that given the season Ben has had with the bat, with whom he put on 88 in 19 overs to put Devon in a good postion. Tiredness did eventually catch up with Telford who was out, he barely lifted his back foot but was brilliantly stumped down the leg side to a wide delivery by Read. Green more fluid and like his old self after tea then clipped a ball to mid wicket 104-4. Ben Steer, "the pink one", who received a warm Yorkshire welcome then unusally lost Charlie FitzRoy. 105-5. Steer and Thompson then fought back putting on 40 in 5 overs, Thompson's first 4 scoring shots 4s, when Thompson was bowled by a straight well pitch up ball! Hum!! With Devon's depth in batting Charlie Barriball was next in and he and Steer put on 51 in 12 overs when having scored 7 off the over,  Barriball  tried to hit over mid on and was caught! Dan Goodey promoted to help the scoring rate, because let's face it it was still on, then lost Steer who perished for an excellent 60 when he skied a catch again trying an ambitious shot. As hard as Toby Codd and Dan Wolf tried the overs ran out and Codd lost his middle and leg stumps in the last over going for a big hit; Devon all out 229, 18 runs short!! It was all about what ifs but it was too late for what ifs, it always is, players had had their chance!

A big thank you to Exmouth CC for their very kind hospitality, Dave for preparing what was an excellent cricket pitch, Lucy and her mum for the fantastic catering and everyone else who made it such a lovely day; the umpires and not forgetting Wendy for scoring - thank you Wendy for 2012; I hope you have enjoyed it and will be available next year. Thank you all the parents and relatives too for your support and kind words. Yorkshire disappeared to Sidmouth and Devon players headed for the sea. Another year over- one less to go! Thank you lads; Nick and I have really enjoyed the season and your company- most of the time! We hope you have too. Reflect a bit and start to learn some of those lessons which we have repeatedly talked about, they will bode you well in your cricketing carrers and in life too! My shin has started to go down Brad!!
