Tour Report This was the fifth tour to South Africa and as in previous years the trip proved to be highly successful. The quality of opposition was of a high standard in both Cape Town and Skukuza (Kruger National Park) and provided our young players with a demanding examination of their abilities. As ever a number of players were able to respond well to the challenge while others found the experience difficult at this stage of their development. The party consisted of players from the 2005 season U14 squad plus four from the U13 age group and of these the batting of Lewis Gregory was arguably the most eye catching of the tour. The highlight has to be the game against a Western Province XI played at Newlands, one of the most beautiful test grounds in the world with Table Mountain providing a dramatic back drop. There was a danger of stage fright but in fact the opposite was the case with the team giving their best all-round performance of the tour. James Burke and Lewis Gregory set the tone with an opening stand of 147 in a 50 over total of 219. In reply the WP X1 were dismissed for 195. We were delighted to welcome Matthew Wood from Somerset CCC as a member of the coaching staff. Matt came through the various age groups in Devon before moving into the professional game and the players benefited from the advice and technical support he was able to provide. The tour provides a unique experience for some of our best young players but it would not be possible without the magnificent help we receive from our good friends in Cape Town and Kruger. Devon Cricket Board would like to thank them all for their continued generosity. This tour also featured a main sponsor and we are grateful to property developers Kewmoor for their support. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
