DCBYA U14s Cambridgeshire Match Report 2009

"Devon Defeat Cambridgeshire In Low Scoring Game-never give up!"

The last game of the season was almost spoilt by the weather but thanks to the hard work of the Blundells' ground staff  the match was salvaged but played in very damp difficult conditions. Winning the toss and batting, perhaps not ideal but what the team wanted to do, Devon's new opening pair, the Kings boys,  Rhys Davies and Laurence May strolled to the wicket confidently. Unfortunately the partnership was soon broken with Davies caught in the gulley fourth ball. Mikey Cousens joined May and they put on 14 before May was caught. Two overs later unusually Cousens is bowled leg stump and Josh Mailling then has his off stump up rooted. Clearly the pitch is not playing very well and it is a case of getting one's head down and grafting every run possible. Callum Cload helped by Sam Loud set about the repair job in excellent fashion before Loudy is bowled with the score on 47. James Dart and Cload then take the score onto 66 when Cload's innings comes to an end caught behind for the top score of the day, 27. Dart soon follows, then Paul Heard who had made a name for himself as the season wore on, playing straight,  but this time he chipped a catch to short mid off. Jack Popham, who  can also bat, as can all the lower order players,  got to double figures and Jack Cherrington hit two fours but Devon were all out 89 in the 38th over. Given the length of and damp outfield this was probably worth another 20-30 runs, still not a great score but..

Team talk, last match, bowl straight at the stumps, the right length for the pitch and batter, take the pace off the ball and let the pitch do the work. Field out of your skins, support each other and fight to the end for each other-TEAM. Mearsy left Alan Swift in charge when the score was 11-2, wickets to Paul Heard and Alex Hunt. From the score book Paul Heard bowled tightly and Josh Mailling came on and also bowled tightly. As the pressure mounted the bowlers who had applied the pressure returned for their second spells and took wickets. Heard 9-2-9-3 and Mailling 9-7-5-3, outstanding figures. In between Sam Loud and Jack Cherrington bowled economically and Alex Hunt took another wicket. Jack Popham returned with Mailling to finish Cambridgeshire off, 64 all out. Devon winning by 25 runs. Mikey Cousens, clearly over his damaged finger took four catches and I understand from the phone calls and text messages that evening Devon fielded brilliantly. A great end to a season, one the Team deserved .

Our thanks to Blundells School, John Smith the grounds man and his team, Devon's parents for providing another excellent spread, the umpires, Ross Cherrington and Robin May for scoring and to all the parents and relatives for their support. It has been an enjoyable season which at one stage promised much. The Team has grown and developed and hopefully players have started to think about their and the Team's game more and also learned many cricket lessons. Have a great time in South Africa in February 2010. See you at the annual luncheon.
