CHARDSTOCK’S game against Culmstock was abandoned after tea when one of the players involved collapsed.
A Culmstock player suffered a suspected heart attack while his side were batting and later died.
Chardstock skipper Rob Hutchings, made a bit of club history with a third successive ton.
Hutchings made 126 and Gavin Churchill struck a sweet unbeaten 50 as Chardstock closed on 260-8.
Culmstock were 60-4 in reply when the game was halted.
Hutchings said: “It was terribly sad that someone came to play a game of cricket and then did not get home and all our thoughts are with the poor chap’s family and friends."
KINGSKERSWELL maintained their 100 per cent start to the season with another convincing seven- wicket win away to Cheriton Fitzpaine.
Cheriton won the toss and surprisingly chose to bat first and quickly found themselves in all sorts of trouble thanks to Kerswell’s dangerous new-ball partnership of Pieter Douglas (1 for 13) and Phil Lacey (2 for 7).
Both bowlers were bowled through to complete nine overs each and after 18 overs Cheriton’s innings was going nowhere at 25 for four.
Of the four wickets that fell the most dramatic was an amazing pick up, swivel, and throwing down of the stumps by Douglas when a quick single seemed a formality.
Cheriton rallied briefly through a combination of Grant Squire (20) and Paddy Blake (26) but when their 50-run partnership was ended the innings rapidly subsided to 94 all out.
Paul Harding (2-22) and Ellis Denega (2-25) also got in on the wicket taking action.
In response the Kerswell innings was moving serenely forward thanks to Nigel Butt (33no) and Steve Waters (21).
It was Butt’s first chance as opener this season and he was able to help steady the ship after Kerswell lost three quick wickets before the in-form Erik Gregersen (21 no) came in and helped to polish things off.
The most impressive of the Cheriton bowlers was Ben Coe, who took two for 14 off his six overs before pulling up with a back injury.
After the game Kerswell’s Skipper Chris Hurrell was warm in his praise for his unbeaten side.
“Things are going really well at the moment but sterner challenges lie ahead,” said Hurrell.
“What is particularly pleasing at the moment is that everybody is saying it is the most fun they have had in a Kerswell shirt for several years and this is exactly the boost the Club needs after a difficult season last year.”
The win moves Kerswell 26 points clear at the top of the F Division with a, played seven won seven record.
CHELSTON stay hard on the heels of the top two in the F Division following a workmanlike seven-wicket win at Woodbury.
Ben Briscoe made 54, Woj Szymanski 48 and Russell Bennett 39 in a Chelston total of 194 all out.
Nalin Chouhan – son of former Devon and Exmouth spinner Vinod – and Ian Hughes took three wickets each for Woodbury, who were bowled out for 147. Bennett took four for 42 and Phil Hunt two for 31.
