Plymouth on course for Sidmouth in semis
PLYMOUTH eased past Paignton by three wickets in the quarter-finals of the Devon KO Cup.

Paignton recovered from 25 for three – Rob Bennett (3-28) and Sam Stein (2-27) doing the early damage - to make 187 for nine in their 40 overs.

“Bennett bowled brilliantly with swing and pace - it's not often you see four slips and a gulley in place in a 40-over match and a maiden bowled,” said Plymouth skipper Matt Hooper.

“It was great to see Sam Stein bowling well again, he is a superb bowler and is nearing his best too.”

The damage was repaired by a stand of 83 between skipper Connor Bryan (42) and Chis Kelmere (37), who added another 32 with Fanie deVilliers (34).

Plymouth wobbled a bit at first – Ben Stein and pinch-hitter Bennett both falling to Stephen George (3-24) – but Marnus Labuschange (69) put them back on course.

By the time the South African run machine was sixth out at 147, Plymouth needed 41 to win which was no real problem for the lower order.

“Marnus batted well again on what was a pitch that was into its fourth innings,” said Hooper.

“Now we go on to play Sidmouth. I haven't got over the last match with them but it should be a cracking semi-final.

“We are desperate to play in the final at our home ground so we will be giving it everything.”

Plymouth are assured of home advantage in the final, which is scheduled for Sunday, August 25, if they get there.

Sidmouth were waved through by Torquay, who were unable to raise a team.

Cornwood’s game against Exeter and the match between Exmouth and Plymstock were postponed due to bad weather.

Paignton 187-9 (C Bryan 42, C Kelmre 37, F deVilliers 34; R Bennett 3-28, S Stein 2-27, B Stein 3-38), Plymouth 188-7 (M Labuschange 69; S George 3-24). Plymouth bt Paignton by 3 wkts.
