Super veteran Mountford standing by for Bovey call-up
BOVEY Tracey’s strength in depth faces a test tomorrow when they go to North Devon.

Unbeaten they may be, but like everyone else Bovey have selection issues from time to time.

Missing at Instow tomorrow are keeper Ben Ayres and seamers Joe Barrs and Ryan Bougourd.

Skipper Peter Bradley hopes to bring Lewis Hammett home from university to keep wicket instead of Ayres, but has another option if Hammett can’t make it in Devon O60s player Nigel Mountford.

“Nigel is doing a job for the 2nd XI right now and I would have few qualms bringing him in as a one-off if Lewis can’t get back,” said Bradley.

“Damian Bourke, our overseas this year, could do it but he broke a finger last year whch is still sore and it isn’t worth putting him in the firing line.”

Youngsters Sam Wyatt-Haines and Aren deYoung are set to come in for Bougourd and Barrs.

North Devon have only won once so far, but Bradley isn’t reading anything into their patchy form.

“The bowling side is decent – even without Glen Querl – and the batting has real depth,” said Bradley.

“Rob Ayre bats at eight for North Devon and he has Premier Division hundreds to his name.

I would say North Devon have under-performed so far and we don’t want them finding their form against us.”

North Devon are looking to get back on course after their drubbing by Exeter.

Rumours have been rife all week that Glen Querl is on his way back from Hampshire to play for North Devon.

Also common currency on the rumour mill is that Somerset will release Craig Overton to his home club for some match practice after injury.

“News to me,” said North Devon skipper Matt Dart, “although it wouldn’t be the first time we get a call late to say one of the Overtons are available.

“The situation with Glen is he has been playing in Hampshire’s 2nd XI – and had game for the firsts against one of the universities – and should find out next week if he is staying there or not.”

As for what North Devon have to do after their loss at Exeter, Dart said: “ Our batting needs to improve vastly.

“We have got the players but they need to step up and be counted.”
