WILL Squire bowled himself into contention for a county call-up after taking five for 29 as a Devon League XI defeated a Cornwall League side by three wickets at Torquay.The Bradninch spinner got among the Cornwall middle order just as the visitors were threatening to run away with the game.
Cornwall were 140 for two when Matt Hicks (2-35) removed Adam Cocking for 67.
Squire struck next when he bowled Josh Fletcher (63) and the two spinners got the break on Cornwall who were all out for 207 with five balls to go.
Devon got off to a great start as openers Andy Kingdon (50) and Mike Pugh (44) plundered 97 in the first 11 overs.
Pugh, Kingdon and Chris Kelmere went in quick succession and when Tom Drake fell to Tim Martin (5-28), Devon League were in a spot of bother at 130 for four.
Hicks, the former Northants Academy scholar, put the pressure back on Cornwall with 63 off 41 balls and by the time he went to Martin the target was nine to win off 21 overs.
Hicks, who has impressed for Exeter this season with bat and ball, has already been sounded out by Devon but can’t commit to three-day cricket due to work commitments.
Devon need a spinner for the Minor Counties Championship game against Cornwall starting at Exeter on Sunday and Squire might fit the bill.
Keith Donohue, the Devon team boss, said he had a short list of candidates to replace the unavailable Gary Chappell and Squire was close to the top of it.
