DEBUTANT Callum Whittaker completed a maiden half century just after lunch in Devon’s Minor Counties Championhip game against Wales at Usk.
Whittaker received a late summons into the side when James Burke pulled out due to Somerset 2nd XI commitments.
At lunch, taken after 37 overs, Devon were 94 for four with Whittaker undefeated on 44.
Whittaker was in before the end of the second over after seeing Plymouth clubmate James Tomes caught at slip by Aneurin Norman off the bowling of Dewi Jones.
Whittaker was just getting settled when surviving opener Peter Bradley was also caught at slip by Norman, this time off the bowling of Harry Powell
Whittaker and David Lye added 34 for the third wicket then Jones struck again. Lye, who was on 18, was caught a extra cover by Powell trying to drive through the off-side.
The last Devon batsman to fall before lunch was Josh Bess, who was caught out at long-on trying to hit Keiran Bull over the top.
Whittaker was 56 not out in Devon's total of 100 for four after 39 overs.
Devon left out seamer Matt Kidd when the team sheets were exchanged this morning.
