Bovey unchanged despite first defeat

BOVEY Tracey captain Peter Bradley has made no rash changes for the game against Bradninch despite seeing the team’s unbeaten record vanish at Sidmouth last Saturday.

Sidmouth won a tense game by two wickets in the last over to move within eight points of Bovey at the top of the table.

Bradley is of the opinion one defeat isn’t a disaster – so why get in a fluster over it?

The side remains exactly the same with youngster Sam Wyatt-Haines getting another chance to open the innings.

At 16 years of age Wyatt-Haines has to be the youngest opener in the top flight this season – and in any season since Lewis Gregory was doing it for Plympton eight or nine years ago.

Gregory is now on the staff at Someset while Wyatt-Haines is attending sessions with the Notts Academy.

It is easy to see why Bradley wants to give the youngster an extended run in the team.

“When you strip away all the hype which sometimes gets in the way, Sam is a young player with talent and the potential to develop into an ever better player,” said Bradley.

“We are in a position where we can give him a good go at the top of the order to gain more experience.”

Looking back at the Sidmouth game the only criticism Bradley has was of the way his side batted.

“What Sidmouth showed us was the importance of someone playing a long innings, in their case it was Josh Bess who the rest batted round.

“It is all very well someone like myself or Damian Bourke batting through for 25-30 overs, but that really isn’t long enough.

“Someone needs to stay there into the last 10, then let the lads at the end play their big shots.”

Torquay, at home to in-form North Devon, will have to make an enforced change in the early order.

Des Kruger isn’t available but Mark Gilmour is which is one all-rounder for another, although Gilmour bats lower than Kruger. Either Nick Watkin or Matt Thompson will float up the order as cover.
