T20 finals day make up starting to take shape

SIDMOUTH are through to the Devon T20 finals day on the County Ground after beating Exeter and Exmouth to get there.

The East Devon regional finals were played at Heathcoat last Sunday and in a thrilling finish Exmouth came up short by nine runs in the final.

Exmouth defeated Heathcoat by 33 runs in the first semi-final, then Sidmouth eased past Exeter by seven wickets.

Lawrence Greenway belted 55 off 45 balls – six fours and a six – in Exmouth’s total of 158 for five against Heathcoat.

Along the way there was a stand of 79 for the fourth wicket with George Greenway, whose 44 not out came off 30 balls and contained six fours and two sixes. Skipper Richard Baggs made 28.

Former Somerset pace bowler Steffan Jones had four wickets for 29 runners. Jack Menheneott bowled a maiden in his none for 18 off four.

You need one big score on T20 cricket to win on the chase – and Heathcoat’s best was only 27 coming from Ned Menheneott coming in at 70 for six with the game already slipping away.

Joe Smith, home from London for the weekend, made 25 at the top of the order but by half way the target was in ten-an-over territory and the chance had gone.

Man of the match Lawrence Greenway took three for 37 and there were two each for Toby Ingham and Gary Chappell.

Exeter hoisted 142 for six against Sidmouth, which was never enough once Liam Lewis got going. His rapid 69 sped Sidmouth to victory.

Exmouth were a tougher nut to crack in the final as even with five players missing on Devon duty they gave it their best shot.

Lewis made 80 and Anthony Griffiths 60 in a Sidmouth total of 176 for two.

Gary Chappell led the Exmouth chase with 70 as they got down to the last over needing 13 to win. They could only get three.

Matt Cooke was the bowling star for Sidmouth, taking four for 30.

The South Devon representative will be decided next Wednesday night (July 17) when Chudleigh face Torquay at Brixham.

Hatherleigh fight it out at Barnstaple against North Devon on Friday to decide who goes through from their competition. Tye Plymouth-against-Tavistock game at Mount Wise has been moved to Monday

The final is at Exeter on Sunday, July 28.
