Devon looking at Wiltshire options in Lions game

DEVON’S senior selectors will be taking a close interest in several players involved in today’s Lions XI friendly against a Worcester Academy side at Wolverhampton (noon).

The Lions – Devon CCC’s development squad – will be taking on a mixture of Worcestershire Academy and 2nd XI players assembled by Damian D’Oliveira.

Devon know the game will be a big test for them – and they don’t want it any other way.

For these are challenging times for the county club as the senior team is going through a transitional phase and there really are places up for grabs.

Devon’s frontline batting in Minor Counties games has been fragile this season, which is why Rhys Davies, Matt Golding and Luke Bess will get in early against Worcestershire.

Davies and Golding have been getting runs down the order for Devon, while Bess played a match-winning knock of 92 for the Lions against a Devon League XI at Paignton last Sunday.

‘We hope Worcestershire put out a strong side as we want to see how they get on against better quality bowling,’ said Tim Western, the Lions director of coaching.

Devon also have a spin bowling issue at the moment as former captain Chris Bradley is bearing the burden largely on his own, although Golding and David Lye have been helping out.

The Lions side for Wolverhampton includes North Devon spinner Max Curtis and Bradninch’s Will Squire.

Said Western: ‘There are places up for grabs in 2014 and maybe sooner.

‘Chris Bradley can’t do it all on his own and the senior selectors are well award they need to do some succession planning.’

Devon: Josh Mailing (Plympton), Rhys Davies (Tavistock), Matt Golding (Bovey) Matt Thompson (Torquay), Luke Bess (Sidmouth). Max Curtis (North Devon), Cameron Evans-Grainger (Exeter). Rob Bennett (Plymouth), Will Squire (Bradninch), Hal Kerton (Plymstock), Matt Kidd (Budleigh).
