A Division - Sandford miss chance to go second

 A DIVISION – WEEK 16

SANDFORD missed the chance to go second in the A Division table when they couldn’t prise apart the last two Abbotskerswell batsmen.

Exeter, who remain in second place, were rained off against Cornwood at Oak Park without a ball bowled.

Sandford would have gone second had they beaten Abbots – and opened up a four-point lead over the County Grounders.

Instead Sandford are a point behind with two games to get ahead. Exeter’s last two games are against bottom two Barton and Shobrooke Park. Sandford play Cornwood (6th) and Brixham (4th), so nothing is cut and dried.

Exeter skipper Jon Tipper said: ‘Fortunately for us Sandford could not take advantage and we are still in second place.

“I am just grateful it is still in our hands.”

Matt Theedom hit seven fours and a six on his way to a top score of 72 in Sandford’s 190 for eight. A stand of 60 with Adrian Small (31) was the best in the innings.

Marcus Green (5-29) was easily the pick of the Abbots’ bowlers.

Abbtots set off in hot pursuit with South African Rikki Lake (75) blazing away.

At 144 for two when Steve Short (29) got out, Abbots were in charge. The turning point was losing Lake at 153 for three.

Jamie Palmer (3-40) the Darryn Mortimer (5-29) got a grip on the game and had Abbots 185 for nine when the overs ran out.

Torquay beat Alphington by 119-runs to send themselves up as champions and leave the men from the Chronicles teetering over the relegation precipice.

Torquay’s top-end batters had an off day – Arron Williams, Matt Thompson and Justin Yau managed just 16 between them – and at 26 for three they needed a lift. Andy Wilson (3-55) was among the early wicket takers.

Nick Watkin (70) and Mickey Wilkinson (46) got Torquay moving with a stand of 69, then Scott Baldry (76) joined Watkin to chalk up 132 for the fifth wicket.

A Torquay total of 239 for six looked pretty imposing for depleted Alphington – and they promptly collapsed to 15 for four then 34 for seven as Ben Passenger ran through them on his way to a seven-for-33 haul.

Paul James (55) and Stuart Shaw (27no) did delay the inevitable until the 28th over, when Alphington were removed for 117. Andy Yau bagged three for 22.

Alphington are now level on points with second-bottom Shobrooke Park, who clung on grimly for a draw at Braunton after realising they were not going to win.

Stewart Rhodes lashed a century and there were chip-ins from Andy Paddison (35) and Alex Hodges (26) as Braunton posted 239 for six declared.

Ben Stockden’s three for 48 was as good as it got for the Shobrooke bowlers.

Braunton declared five overs early to have more time to get Shobrooke out, but the tactic didn’t pay off.

Spinner Harry Booker (4-48) made steady inroads through the Shobrooke order as Jon James (36), Justin Dollow (32) and Phil Anning (26) all came and went in a running total of 148 for eight.

Skipper Chris Ford and Ben Trenaman batted out the last 14 overs to earn three more points in a total of 171 for eight.

Barton skipper Adam Parker has vowed to fight to the bitter end after a five-wicket defeat at Brixham left the Cricketfield Road side staring defeat in the face.

Barton make the short trip to Torquay this Saturday hanging on to their A Division status by the skin of their teeth.

Parker’s team have not won a game all season and with two games to go they are 13 points adrift of safety.

A run-in comprising leaders Torquay and second-placed Exeter is hardly promising!

However, Parker hasn’t run up the white flag over the Cricketfield Road pavilion just yet.

“We will give everything to stay up and keep scrapping to the end,” said Parker.

“We have two massive games left – they are two cup finals -where every effort will go into positive results.”

Barton were all out for 161 against Brixham with more extras (49) in the scorebook than anything else!

Andy McVeigh made 28, Jim Parker 26 and Damon Calland 22. Anthony Marr took three for 30 while Mike Meach had two for 11.

Brixham were 17 for two after early difficulties against Parker (2-46), but a stand of 100 for the third wicket between Marr (50) and Chris Lanyon (39) put them back on course.
