F DIVISION
SHALDON duly claimed the five points they needed to secure one of the F Division promotion berths with a 10-wicket win over eight-man Hemyock.
Craig Greenwood’s side must now sit out next Saturday to see if Topsham St James can bank 17 points in their final game at Culmstock which would deny Shaldon the title.
Greenwood though is up-beat about that: “For me we are worthy champions. Had we not had those points taken off us at the start fop the campaign when we were penalised for playing a couple of our juniors and fell foul of registration rules, then we’d be champions now.
“To be promoted is great and we duly celebrate with champagne.
“Now we sit tight and see if Culmstock can do us a favour next weekend. But, whatever happens, my lot are a champion side in my eyes!”
Hemyock batted first and were bowled out in just ten overs for 38 with Chris Whitehead bowling a triple wicket maiden with the second over of the match. He went on to take 5-24 whilst Carl Woolnough claimed 2-14. Todd Ballman then hit an unbeaten 24 as the hosts raced to victory in ten overs.
Yarcombe are virtually assured of the tag ‘best of the rest’ in the F Division after they banked 18 points from a four wicket success at Newton St Cyres.
The home side closed on 131-8 with Mike Parfitt top scoring on 29. Matthew Barnacle took 3-45 from 13 excellent overs and then Simon Durrant (30) and James Mitchum (21) led the visitors to a four wicket win. Chris Collier took 2-34 for the Mid Devon men.
Kingskerswell, minus skipper Paul Mitchell who was at Edgbaston watching the Twenty20 finals day action, went down by four wickets at home to Culmstock.
Mark Bryant (60) and Dave Lear (26) led the hosts to 162-7. Ross Stickland took 3-35 for the Mid Devon side and then hit an unbeaten 26 top help his side over the winning line after a splendid knock of 93 from Spencer Popham.
Paul Harding took 3-33 and Dave Lear claimed 3-71 for the beaten hosts,
Cheriton Fitzpaine claimed only their third win of the season beating visiting Cullompton by 37 runs in a high-scoring affair.
Cherries’ groundsman Mike Foan cut and rolled a new strip on the morning of the game to make sure there was action. His hard work paid dividends as his side posted a healthy 264-8 led there by Grant Squire (72) and John Pitts (45). Foan chipped in with 29.
Jack Grandfield was the pick of the Cully bowlers with 4-28 and he then struck a solid 78 to lead the run chase.
However, only Toby Maddocks with an unbeaten 36 was also able to get amongst the runs as Pitts completed a fine all-round effort with 3-50 and Paddy Blake bagged a brace with the final Cully wicket falling on 227.
Chelston were 48-run winners at Exeter Civil service where a fine unbeaten 68 from Kris Mabbutt saw them to 144-7. Steve Mitchell chipped in with 17 as Pete Rowe (3-33) and Joe Burkemor (3-24) took wickets. Greg Newcombe then top scored with 36 as wickets fell at regular intervals to Paul Smethurst (5-44) and Phil Hunt (4-13), the final one falling on 96.
