NORTH DEVON LEAGUE – WEEK 19
WEEK 19 saw the final remaining unbeaten record in the league ended, plenty of low scoring and two hat-tricks!
Division Two leaders Barnstaple and Pilton had their unbeaten record taken from them at bottom of the table Morebath in a thrilling encounter that was won by the hosts by a single run with the final wicket taken off the penultimate ball of the game. One of the hat-tricks was taken by Jonathan Hunter of Newton Tracey in the Division One game at home to Filleigh whilst David Binns bagged his treble in an over that actually saw him take four wickets, that for Belstone in the Division Four game at home to Lynton and Lynmouth II.
Division One
JUST two top flight games were staged with one of them signalling the end of the Hatherleigh title hopes as they suffered a fourth defeat of the season, surprisingly beaten by 103 runs at struggling Sandford who hauled themselves out of the bottom two as a result of their victory. Darren Mortimer was the star of the show for the Creedy Park side. First he hit a sparkling 121 as he and James Gibson (52) led the home side to 215. Rob Fishleigh claimed 3-21 for the visitors who were then bundled out for 112 with Gary Abdul (3-3), Simon Ashplant (3-19) and that man Mortimer (3-2) claiming the wickets.
Filleigh’s penultimate outing of the term saw them win by 89 runs at Newton Tracey where they batted first and closed on 218-9. Jaz Kalsi fell nine short of yet another century. He and Gary Henry, the latter batting at number ten, took the score from a perilous 114-8 to 209-9, Henry finishing unbeaten on 41.
Jonathan Hunter was the pick of the home bowlers taking 6-56 including a hat-trick. Simon Gear was the only batsman to prosper in the reply with a knock of 44 as Jamie Palmer (3-17), Gary Henry (2-37) and Mike Prideaux (2-38) picked up wickets.

Sandford 215 (D Mortimer 121, J Gibson 52; R Fishleigh 3-21), Hatherleigh 112 (G Abdul 3-3, S Ashplant 3-19, D Mortimer 3-22). Sandford (20pts) bt Hatherleigh (2) by 103 runs.
Division Two
THE big surprise came at bottom of the table Morebath where leaders Barnstaple and Pilton saw their unbeaten record ended in a thrilling contest that went right down to the wire.
Richard Saville (79) and Robb Venn (32) saw the hosts to 197-9. Dave Orr then led the run chase with 53 whilst the hosts kept the pressure on, using no fewer than six bowlers. Robb Venn produced the most economical figures of 1-14, Ed Marks picked up 2-33 and the all-important final wicket was taken by Andrew Foxwood with a smart caught and bowled, to take the final Barum wicket off the penultimate delivery with the visitor’s two runs from victory, bowled out for 196.
Beaford were 37 run winners in a low scoring affair at Victoria Park. Geoff Lake (35) and Mark Lake (28) led the visitors to 135-8. Andy Jeffrey (4-24) and Marc Bettis (3-17) were the principle wicket takers for Victoria Park who were then hustled out for just 98 with Colin Bettis top scoring with 19. Mark Lake finished with the stunning figures of 6-4 from nine overs and Ali James ended with 4-22.
Shobrooke Park climbed out of the bottom two with a thrilling four run home win over Incorrigibles. David Jollife hit 69 as the home side were bowled out for 191. Josh Clare took 5-20 for the visitors who were then staring defeat in the face at 149-9. However Clare (23no) and Dillon Crouch (31) took their side to within a single blow of victory before Ben Stockton claimed the wicket of Crouch on 187. Andrew Steer (3-28), Pete Steer (3-042) and Dave Manning (3-29) were the other Shobrooke Park wicket takers.

Division Three
A waterlogged wicket put paid to the section’s Match of the Day with no play possible at second in the table Bratton Fleming where table topping Halberton were the scheduled visitors. It leaves the Mid Devon men with two games to play, needing one more win to guarantee their place in the second tier next season. They are at Sandford on the final Saturday of the month and finish their campaign at North Devon on September 4.
Holsworthy hauled themselves away from the relegation places with their sixth win of the season in a low scoring affair with visiting Filleigh II. The host batted first and were bowled out for 105 with only Matt Marks (29) and Andrew Butler (24) making much impression as Martin Brice (4-25) and Andrew Collier (3-15) did the damage with the ball. Brice then top scored with 25 in the reply but that was almost half the entire team offering, the final wicket falling on 55! Jack Greening took 4-12 and Andrew Butler finished with 3-17.
Newton Tracey II were bowled out for 159 at North Devon II with Andy Chatham (49) and Colin Wadsworth (47) the principle run scorers. Raymond Clark claimed 6-18 in nine overs for the Instow men who were taken to an emphatic ten wicket win by openers Dan Pickard (81) and Tom Stanton (64).
Bratton Fleming versus Halberton – no play owing to waterlogged wicket.

Division Four
BELSTONE bagged a tenth win of the season and edged closer to promotion with a nine wicket home win over Lynton and Lynmouth II. The visitors were bowled out for just 61 with the top score of 12 coming from the bats of Charles Walker and Barnaby Haywood. David Binns had an afternoon to remember with the ball taking four wickets in an over! Binns also took a hat-trick, claiming wickets with the fourth, fifth and sixth balls of what proved to the final over as the visitors crashed from 61-5 to 61 all out! Scott Tremain then hit an unbeaten 35 to see the table toppers to victory.
Petrockstowe were bowled out for 127 at Kelseymen but still managed to win the game by 33 runs. Lee Cockwill hit an unbeaten 68 in the Petrockstowe innings. Giles Bashford (4-13) , Callum Mitchum (2-19) and James Lathwell (2-34) took wickets for the Kelseymen who were then bundled out for 94. Wayne Manning (19) and Paul Jaggers (17) were the only home batsmen to muster any sort of innings as Jack Morgan (4-20), Ian Cockwill (3-11) and Lee Cockwill (2-35) took wickets.
Joe Kelly hit 51 to top score in a North Devon III offering of 196-8 at North Molton. Peter Davis (2-41) and Adam Crisp (2-38) claimed wickets for the ghost who were then bowled out for 139. Chris Turner (35) and Davis (18) provided the main individual offerings as Fergus O’Donnell (2-6), Ali Kelly (2-18) and Sam Meadowcroft (2-32) claimed wickets for the Instow side.

Division Five
IN the one Saturday game played, Filleigh III were 63-run winners at home to Bratton Fleming II. David Boyd (34) tops cored in the Filleigh 206-5. Pat Crane (2-32) and Giles Benbow (2-30) took wickets for the visitors who were then bowled out for 143. Crane completed a fine all-round effort for Bratton Fleming with 41. Simon Prosser took 3-19 and Boyd bagged a brace to go with his earlier runs.
Heathcoat II edged closer to promotion with a seven wicket win at Barnstaple and Pilton where the bat ruled for much of the contest. The hosts batted first and scored 159-5 with Matt Clark (62) and Brian Roe (43) the tops corers. James Davis then hit an unbeaten 65 and Lee Dixon weighed in with an unbeaten 46 as th4e Knightshayes men got home with plenty of room to spare.
Nomansland were 34 run winners at home to Bishop Nympton. Stuart Cole (52) top scored in Nomansland’s 190 all out. James Campbell took four wickets for the visitors who were then bowled out for 156. Mike Burrows top scored with 27 whilst Max Borchardt claimed 3-35 for the hosts.
