THE worrying goes on for Chudleigh after they let a winning position slip away at Hatherleigh.
Nothing less than a win will do against Plympton this Saturday to stave of relegation – and even that might not be enough if Lewdown win their derby date with Hatherleigh.
Chudleigh have to find five more points against Plympton this Saturday than Lewdown get against Hatherleigh to dodge the drop.
Shaun Newland top scored for Chudleigh with 43 in a 50-over total of 179 for six.
Hatherleigh knocked off the runs with more than three overs to spare, but got there the hard way having been 70 for seven after a going over from Fahad Kahliq and Matt Heather.
Heather’s 31 was as good as it got for Chudleigh early on as Rob Cockwill (2-42), Rob Fisheleigh and skipper Mark Lake (2-43) all got among the wickets.
Newland and Rob Clarke (22) put on 40 for the fifth wicket as Chudleigh improved from 80 for four.
After Clarke fell caught and bowled to the returning Cockwill, Khaiq (31) and Newland added another 43 for the sixth wicket.
Hatherleigh could have done without losing opener Danny Forrester to the second ball after tea – Khaliq having him caught behind – and that set the tone.
Gareth Tidball’s 23 was the only score of note in a running total of 67 for six – which became 70 for seven after Cockwill was run out.
Skipper Lake has been a constant for Hatherleigh this season with bat, ball or both and came to the rescue again.
Lake shored up one end for 41 not out while Ryan Davies made 67 at he other in an unbroken stand of 111 to win the game.
“It was very frustrating to throw away a winning position like that,” said Chudleigh skipper Ed Foreman.
“To have Hatherleigh 70 for seven and not win is not good enough.
“They batted really well but we took our foot off the gas and should have finished them off.
“We now go into the last week in a tricky position and with the hardest game.
“If we get out of it from here we it will be a miracle."
