Season's best for Shaldon +Alphas warning + Sutton spot on + more

SHALDON amassed a season’s best 339 for nine against Kentisbeare on their way to a 110-run win that keeps them clear of the C Division East danger end.

Victory leaves Shaldon 18 points in front of Kentisbeare, who occupy the second drop slot.

Defeat would have left Shaldon in danger of dropping into the bottom two – not somewhere skipper Mark Couch is keen to visit even briefly.

Karl Bkackburn set the tone for Shaldon by belting 79 off 60 balls and put on 138 for the first wicket with George Thomas (40).

Tshepo Legodi chipped in with 50, Will Moore 26 and there were runs right down the order. Tail-ender Couch got off the mark by hitting a six in his 16 not out.

Kents were all out for 229 with more than seven overs to go, which represented a great pull-back job by the Shaldon bowlers.

Scott Chappell (40) and Rhys Thomas (49) helped Kents reach 167 for four with 16 overs to go – a stiff but gettable asking rate around 10 to win.

Moore turned the game Shaldon’s way with six wickets for 27 runs as Kents lost their last four wickets for 28 runs.

ALPHINGTON skipper Stuart Shaw will remind his players they can’t afford to ease off when they think a game is one as they may come unstuck.

The Alphas go to Filleigh this Saturday second in the table behind leaders Ottery St Mary.

Alphington have been there since the first month of the season and will be disappointed to finish any lower.

Last time out they defeated Feniton by four wickets, chasing 167 a result if not a margin of victory that pleased Shaw.

“We were  on 98 when the second wicket went and 107 for the third,” said Shaw.

“The game looked won, but we were a bit sloppy closing it out.

“Adam Ramcharran (1-17 off nine) bowled well for Feniton, but we should have concentrated a bit harder.

“Against better teams a lapse can cost you the game.”

Ramcharran top scored with 39 and Graham Tucker hit 27 for Feniton, who were bowled out by Andy Green (4-28), Andy Wilson (3-36) and Tom Bath (2-41).

Neil Murring (29) and Ian McDonald (47) got Alphington going, Dave Haysom (28( chipped in and after interference from Jon Pyle (3-31), Paul Morgan (26) wrapped it up.

OTTERY St Mary, 27 points clear at the top of the table after beating Filleigh by  seven wickets, are away to Banstaple on Saturday.

Mark Prideaux got stuck in traffic on the way to the game and whey he arrived Filleigh were 63 for seven.

Will Harrison (2-21), Matt Reed (3-22) and Billy Rudolph (2-22) where the bowlers who did the damage.

Prideaux cracked 73 as Filleigh made up for lost time. And with James Campbell making 26, the visitors scraped up 157 all out.

Dan Flower and Billy Rudolf (26) got Ottery away to a 55-run start.

Ottery skipper Lewis Townsend (28no) arrived at 118 for three and with Flower (73no) wrapped up a comfortable win.

Ottery are so far ahead there is a danger they could take promotion for granted.

Skipper Townsend says he does not see it that way at all.

“We aren’t getting too wrapped up in where we are in the league,” said Townsend.

“Having a settled side has benefited us this season as we tip up to play, everyone knows their jobs and we just go out to enjoy ourselves.”

New signing Kevin Kelly, the former Honiton captain, made his Ottery debut in the 2nd XI and took three for 40 in the 72-run defeat by Plymouth.

“He is a handy player to have around and I don’t think it will be long before he is banging on the door for a first team place,” said Townsend.

UPLYME carried too much firepower for Barnstaple &  Pilton as they cruised to a 95-run win

Adam Caddy (34) and Alex Richards (32) were the leading scorers with the bat for Uplyme, who made 213 for nine. A grand total of 53 extras helped no end!

Jack Moore’s two for 34 was the best of the bowling for B&P.

Tom Popham (63) and Steve Moore (24) had B&P in a good place at 102 for three, or so it seemed.

Uplyme wheeled Richard O’Halloran into the attack and he took six wickets for nine runs as B&P crashed to 118 all out.

Barnstaple will do well to avoid a third-successive defeat this Saturday as they are at home to leaders Ottery St Mary.

IAN Sutton more than plotted the downfall of his former club as Clyst Hydon defeated Seaton by 44 runs.

Former captain Sutton was back in charge of Hydon for the game as current skipper oz Besley was on holiday.

Sutton’s first act was to score 62 in a stand of 106 for the first wicket with Chris Holmes as Clyst Hydon amassed 264 for six,

Holmes went on to reach 88 before he was dismissed. There were two wickets each for Ben Morgan and Mark Wheeler.

Steve Pritchard top scored for Seaton, who were bowled out in reply for 220. Robbie Prior (55) and Wheeler (39) chipped in.

Sutton got the bowling changes spot on as Dhanuja Haturusingha (4-19) and Kev Serccombe (2-23) did the damge.

Clyst Hydon make the short trip to Feniton this Saturday.
