C Divison West - Bridestowe worked hard by Whitchurch

BRIDESTOWE remained top of C West after a narrow victory at home to fellow Moorlanders Whitchurch.

Tom Fogerty picked up the first two wickets with a direct hit run out and also getting Charlie Barriball caught behind.

Nazir Khan was introduced early on and got turn from the surface on his way to 4-25.

Only Rob Bone (27) managed a significant score for the Church, and even he was helped by a couple of missed chances.

Dan Fogerty was held back to clean up the tail, and did so in fine fashion with 3-24.

Chris Lavis removed Kerswill for the final wickets to leave Whitchurch 119 all out.

The Bridestowe chase got off to a quick start through Fogerty and Sizmur, who smashed Sambells for 22 in just 3 overs.

It was to be spin all the way at the other end, with only 5 overs of seam bowling in the Bridestowe innings.

The score was at 55-0 before Sizmur was given out to Kerswill (2-24) to what would prove the first of many LBW decisions.

Barry Down also fell LBW at the other end to Barriball's off-spin and BCC were in a spot of bother when Tom (32) top-edged a sweep from the same bowler.

Things went quickly downhill from there as Khan was caught in the gully, Hatton became another LBW victim, and James Ewen was inexplicably run out off a free-hit.

Sam Ewen extended the collapse as he hit a short ball straight back to Barriball and Dan also fell lbw to complete Barriball's (5-22) 5-fer.

From 55-0 to 84-8, the hosts had suffered a spectacular collapse, through a combination of poor shots and accurate spin bowling.

That brought two men to the crease who were not going to roll over and hand the old rivals an unexpected win.

Mark Fogerty and Mark Butler both played their usual games, with the former solid in defence and the latter looking to find the fence at every opportunity.

Some big sixes from both batsman saw Bridestowe home with nearly half their overs, but only 2-wickets, remaining.

It should have been a much simpler chase for the home side, but the visitors used their bowling resources well on a pitch that did offer plenty of turn.

SEB Ansley slammed a career-best 142 as the Villagers trounced visiting Yelverton by 145 runs.

Stoke racked up a hefty 278 for six in their 45 overs with Ansley the star turn.

Ansley biffed 22 fours and seven sixes – that’s 130 in boundaries – as the bowling was flayed to all parts of the ground.

Along the way Ansley shared a stand of 190 with Shane Lewis, who made a respectable 54.

Skipper Jack Tolley added a brisk 49 not out as Stoke heaped on the runs.

Yelverton never even got close as they were bowled out for 123.

The bowlers who did the damage were Lewis with five for 20 and Ian Whittington (2-17).

Geoff Brain made 32, as did Lewis Julian, who was eighth out when the slide was on.

Stoke are away to Plymouth CS&R this Saturday.

On Sunday the club celebrates the opening of the new pavilion on the ground with a special game to mark the occasion.

A Chairman’s XI will play an Invitation XI skippered by Herald Express cricket correspondent Conrad Sutcliffe.

Among the  golden oldies of local cricket penciled in to play for the Invitation side are Mark Faulkner (Chelston & Kings), Neal Peach (Kingsbridge) and former Torquay, Bovey and Barton captain Ian Coulton.

England hockey player Gizelle Anseley is also in the side.

The match starts at 2pm and all friends of Stoke Gabriel are welcome.

DARTINGTON Totnes stay hard on the heels of Bridestowe at the top of the table followed a three-wicket win at Kingsbridge.

Kings belied their lowly position by putting on 81 for the second wicket through Jack Westlake (53) and Julian Bertie (41) to reach 111 for one.

Three wickets fell cheaply before James Shephard (26) and Tom Bridgens (25) pushed Kingsbridge towards their eventual total of 197 all out.

The wickets were shared around with two each for Harry Baxendale, Chris Cool and Andrew Blyth.

Dartington won with more than three overs to go, but it was hardly a cakewalk.

The key stand was one of 70 for the fourth wicket between Cook (41) and Ben van Nierkerk (52).

Cook was given out lbw early on, but called back to the crease by bowler Neal Peach (2-22) who hadn’t appealed as he believed Cook had edged the ball into his pads.

Liam Bligh (23no) was in at the end when the runs were knocked off.

Will Pike (3-31) was the pick of the Kingsbridge bowlers.

Kingsbridge go to Whitchurch this Saturday. Dartington & Totnes are at home to Chagford.

CHAGFORD’S up-and-down season continued with a 32-run defeat at the hands of lowly Plymouth CS&R.

Civil cracked along to 232 all out with Rob Gaylard’s 69 the best of the knocks.

Gaylard and Dan Sanders (26) put on 76 for the third wicket. Chip-ins from Chris Sanders (44) and Dan Windsor (36) kept the scoreboard whizzing round.

Chris Rowlands (4-41) took the bowling award for Chagford.

Chagford lost their way on the chase after James Fulner was out for 75 and looked on course for an early finish when he was seventh out at 138.

Duncan Manners-Chapman (33) and Jake Griffiths had other ideas and their stand of 39 for the eighth wicket kept Chagford in with a chance.

Civil were glad to break the stand and get Chagford all out for 200.

BABBACOMBE are up to third in the table after routing struggling Ashburton by 112 runs.

Leaders Bridestowe remain 21 point clear, but second-placed Dartington  Totns are only nine points distant.

Ashburton;s bowlers made it hard for Babbacombe initially – then Andy Kingdon cut loose.

Chris Mabbutt (22) and Nathan Beech (19) put on 37 for 1st wkt as Babbacombe reached  66 for two at halfway.

Mike Pugh and Kingdon put on 42, then Broad (28) ad Kingdon notched 46 in six overs to boost the run rate.

When Matt Inch was out in the 39th over with score on 172,  Babbacombe were set to get to 200.

Then came the partnership between Cameron Fryer and Kingdon that produced 102 runs from the last six and half overs.

“Andy just let loose - a remarkable innings and a real pleasure to watch,” said Broad. “Cameron only scored 10 of them but ran his socks off.

Kingdon finished on 155no - 21 fours and four sixes in a total of 274 for five.

Ashburton got off to good start with 56-run opening partnership in only 14 overs.

“Once we took pace off the ball they found it hard to score and we took regular wickets,” said Broad.

Ashburton were all out for 162 with wickets shared between Tim Goodwin (4-33), Mabbutt (2-11) and Paul Bates (2-30).

Will Coon (26) and Marcus West (21) were the only batters to make much impression for Ashes.
