Pyle poised for Exmouth debut

DAN Pyle will make his debut for Exmouth against Exeter on Saturday as the Maer Ground outfit aim to bounceback from their four-wicket defeat at Bovey Tracey.

Pyle, the hard-hitting teenage left-hander who moved to Exmouth from Shobrooke Park just before the transfer deadline, replaces Jon Evennett in an otherwise unchanged side.

Evennett suffered a side strain playing for Exmouth on Sunday in their T20 game against Seaton.

Exmouth were bowled out for 116 at Bovey Tracey – then had the home side 40 for five in reply.

An unbeaten half-century by Matt Golding saw Bovey to victory.

Richard Baggs, the Exmouth captain, said afterwards it was his side’s ‘worst display’ of the season.

With time to reflect in the game, his view hasn’t changed.

“Being all out for 116 was bad enough – having Bovey 40 for five and not killing them off was worse,” said Baggs.

‘We lacked intensity in the field and only attacked them from one end.

“In the T20 at Budleigh on Sunday we got it right. That is what we need to carry through into the Exeter match.”

Exeter, who dropped into the bottom two after a 129-run defeat by Sidmouth, look in better shape team-wise for the game against Exmouth.

Skipper Miles Lenygon reckoned he had seven potential 1st XI players missing.

Exeter were so short handed they were forced to cancel their 3rd XI game against Ipplepen as they had run out of players.

The return of Ben Green, Rob Holman, Dom Bess, George Greenway and Lorenzo Machado, peps Exeter up no end.

Somerset’s Alex Barrow is pencilled in but has yet to confirm he is available.

Lenygon felt, under the circumstances, his side didn’t do too badly against the reigning champions.

Sidmouth were 166 for one with 24 overs to go – so a total of 307 for eight represented an Exeter fightback.

“To restrict Sidmouth to 307 after the start they got showed some character from the guys,” said Lenygon.

“Tom Lammonby was brilliant, both in the middle and at the death.

“With the bat it was always going to be tough. There were some very soft dismissals.

“To walk away with seven points against a strong Sidmouth side when we were missing so many guys was not the worst effort.”
