Heathcoat prove bogeymen for North Devon again

HEATHCOAT lived up to their reputation as North Devon’s bogey side by beating the Premier leaders again.
Heathcoat won at North Devon on the first day of the season – and were gunning for the double against a side with a poor record at Knightshayes.
North Devon’s total of 208 all out was arguably below par, but they worked hard defending it.
The difference between the two sides was a knock of 68 by Heathcoat skipper Sam Smith that laid the platform for his side to go on and win the match.
North Devon had lots of chip-in scores and only one real failure in their total.
Opener Callum French was the only one of the top nine batters not to reach double figures.
Conversely, no one made more than Ed Yeo, who reached 34 then got out to Paul Elliott.
There were two stands of 46, which were Tom Ansell (25) and Max Curtis (29) for the second wicket then Yeo and Rob Ayre (25) for the seventh.
Heathcoat shared the wicket taking around with two each for four bowlers. Jack Menheneott (2-27) and Paul Elliott (2-36) were the best value.
Heathcoat got to 64 for three in reply with Dylan Penberthy (28) the only batsman to stay with Smith for long.
A stand of 102 between Smith and Brad Barnes put Heathcoat in control, but the game was far from won.
Josh King winkled out Smith then Barnes (45) in the space of six balls.
Sam Maunder didn’t last long and when he went to King (3-37) Heathcoat were 188 for six.
Justin Williams (13no) and Jamie Drew (14no) saw Heathcoat home with the minimum of fuss.
North Devon are still top, but their lead over Torquay has been trimmed to six points.
Toby Lochead, the Heathcoat vice-captain, said memories of their defeat by Plymouth helped spur them on when the going got tough.
“It was a great win against a side many think will be at the top of the table at the end of the season,” said Lochead.
“We still didn't bowl and field how we would like too, however we are regularly bowling sides out and our bowlers deserve credit for that.
“North Devon were 20-30 below par, and we knew if we batted the 50 overs we would win the game.
“Sam showed his class, and a good innings from Brad alongside him to set us up for the win.
"When they both got out I think the thoughts of what happened last week crept in, however we bat a long way down and ended up winning rather comfortably.”
