Brixham's lead whittled away

BRIXHAM will be keen to stop a slip becoming a slide when they face Tavistock at Boundary Park this Saturday.

Brixham were 25 points clear at the top of the table two weeks ago – then they lost to Cornwood and the lead trimmed to 14 points.

Their lead was whittled away completely in the latest round of fixtures when they lost by four wickets to Budleigh.

Brixham now have a third share of top spot with Budleigh and Cornwood, who all have the same 151 points.

Matt McGilivray made 35 in a Brixham running total of 66 for four. Mark Orchard (21)  and Craig Eaves (29) made runs before the lower order collapsed.

Brixham went from 114 for six to 129 all out in six overs with the two Robs – Craze (2-20) and Newman (2-30) - doing the damage.

Budleigh skipper Lloyd White went early – bowled Eaves (3-35) for four – but Andy Procter (43) and Craze (28) made rapid progress towards the target.

Procter smashed Lee Upham out of the attack by carting him for 22 in his onley over.

Mark Orchard suffered a lesser fate: one over for 14 runs.

Procter had 43 of the 64 on the board when he was dismised by McGillivray (3-29).

Sam Richardson’s 32 not out saw it through for Budleigh, who won with more than 24 overs to spare.

“A super game of cricket played in battling spirit from both sides,” said Budleigh skipper Lloyd White.

“Sid Fereday (15) bowled without doubt the best spell he has ever bowled and set the tone for the innings to come.

“Then it was spin all the way - Procter, Craze, Cephas and Newman all bowled superbly. Absolute class.

“We made a bit of a meal of it when batting - a combination of some poor shots and some good bowling by McGilvary.

“A three-way tie at the top of the table has made things so interesting.

“We will only take one game at a time - add up all the points at the end of the year and see what the table says.”
