Darts take over at top of C Division West

Bridestowe slipped to their third defeat of the season away at Babbacombe – and it cost them the divisional leadership.

The home side won the toss and racked up 200 for eight with most of the runs coming from Cameron Fryer (52), Seb Powell (48no) and Michael Pugh (40).

Nazir Khan was pick of the Bridestowe bowlers as his nine overs cost just 11 runs, and he also picked up the important wickets of Andy Kingdon and Nathan Beech.

Chris Lavis had 2-42 and Gary Sizmur picked up 3-43 in what was a decent effort with the ball by Bridestowe.

Bridestowe collapsed to 34 for five as the pitch did plenty with the new ball; the damage was done by Fryer (2-17), Dave Williams (2-10) and Tim Goodwin (2-28).

Runs down the order from Khan (22) Neil Griffiths (34) and Mark Fogerty (22no) got Bridestowe to a respectable total of 154 for nine, but the chase was always going to be a huge ask with so many early wickets falling.

DARTINGTON & Totnes beat Chagford by 87 runs to shoot to the top of the C Division West table.

D&T had been trailing leaders Bridestowe for a while, waiting for the Moorlanders to slip up.

Babbacombe did D&T a favour and themselves a bit of good by beating Bridestowe by 46 runs.

D&T now lead the table by a point from Bridestowe with Babbacombe a further nine points behind.

Kalon Veale top scored for D&T with 100 not out in their total of 219 for nine.

Veale, who hit six sixes, reached his ton off the final ball of the D&T innings.

A stand of 146 for the third wicket between Veale and Chris Cook (63) formed the backbone of the D&T innings.

Wickets were hard to come by for Chagford. Skipper Del Lammonby bowled nine overs for seven runs and one wicket. Duncan Manners-Chapman had two for 20.

Chagford got to 42 without loss, slipped to 97 for six and lost their last five wickets for 35 runs en-route to 132 all out.

There were modest runs for James Fulner (26) and Paul Penberthy (22) before the slide started.

Harry Baxendale (3-19) led the bowling effort for D&TY, aided and abetted by Cook (2-26) and Ben van Niekerk (2-38).

KINGSBRIDGE are on the up after beating Whitchurch by 89 runs.

James Westlake was the man of the moment for Kingsbridge with 104 in a total of 264 for six at Whitchurch.

A second-wicket stand of 117 between Westlake and James Ford (43) underpinned the innings. Will Pike chipped in with 39.

Whitchurch were going well at 107 for two – Kevin Jacobs (45) and Ben Powell (31) the run scorers – but 110 for four was a different story.

Wickets fell gradually as James Rosewarne, Bhanu deSilva and James Shephard took two each to help remove Whitchurch for 175.

Kingsbridge aren’t out of the bottom three yet, but are only seven points from safety. The side they need to get past are Stoke Gabriel, who are the opposition this Saturday.

STOKE Gabriel’s patchy form continued with a 90-run defeat away to Plymouth CS&R.

Chris Sanders blazed away for an unbeaten 116 in Civil’s total of 275 all out.

Pick of the bowlers for Stoke with three for 39 was Seb Ansley. Shane Lewis took two for 39.

Stoke were all out for 185 – Lewis top scoring with 50. Dan Windsor led the bowling attack for Civil with three for 29.

The Villagers have a difficult run coming up with Kingsbridge followed by Chagford, who need some wins, and promotion-chasing duo Bridestowe and Dartington & Totnes.

Skipper Jack Tolley is looking forward to being back at home, although a change of scenery won’t cure all ills.

“For starters we will be playing on a more familiar and better Stoke track compared to last week,” said Tolley.

“Maybe we need to bowl a little tighter and not go looking for wickets.

“Our batting has been much improved over the last four-five weeks.

“Shane Lewis could be coming into form at the right time and - hopefully - Seb Ansley can keep scoring runs.

“Isaac Withington is back to boost the bowling line up.

“We have three tough games after this week so it is very important to get a win to pull away from the bottom few teams.”

IT’S make-or-break time for Ashburton as the next three games could decide their fate.

Ashes are stuck fast at the bottom of the table after losing by 56 runs to Yelverton, the side directly above them.

The next three games are Chagford (5th), Plymouth CS&R (4th) and Kingsbridge (8th). With 23 points to make up already, three more defeats could leave Ashburton too far behind to catch up in the final four matches.

Geoff Brain (46) and Richard Townsend (71) put on 101 for Yelverton’s first wicket as the Moorlanders headed towards a total of 243 for eight.

Richard West (34) and Pat Hobbs (22) moved the score along at the end.

Matt Coon had three for 61 for Ashes. Taylor McLellan and Gordon Colwill were the miserly bowlers.

Ashbuton started brightly enough – they were 144 for four – then lost six wickets for 43 runs on their way to 187 all out.

McLellan with 48, Martin Causey (26) and Matt Churchill (30) seemed on top of the bowling.

James Dark (24) went during the slide and Colwill’s 26 not out at the end changed little other than the margin of defeat.

Destroyer in chief was West (3-51), aided and abetted by returning opening bowler Sam Crompton with two wickets in his second spell.
