CORNWOOD lived up to their reputation as the last-gasp experts with a one-wicket win at Lewdown.
The table-topping Corns’ never-say-die attitude earned them last-over wins against Bradninch and Brixham – and they were at it again on the Recreation Field.
Not for the first time either it was Elliot Staddon and Adam Goodliffe who saw Cornwood over the line.
Staddon is making a habit of rescuing hopeless situations and Goodliffe is getting used to going in last with a match win and winning it!
Lewdown made 206 for nine with Johann Wessells (48) and new Plymouth Albion signing Billy Searle (35) putting on 80 for the third wicket.
Mark Jordan made 40, Cornwood gave away 40 in extras and Lewdown tail-enders Ben Williams and brother Harry put on 30 at the end to make it a bit more interesting.
Jackson Thompson had four for 41 and there were two wickets each for skipper Jason Hall and Craig James, who got both in his first over.
Off went Cornwood in pursuit with Thompson (46) and Hall (32) at the forefront before it slowed down.
Wickets for Talan Burns (3-35) and Leon Horn (3-35) put a different complexion on the game and at 155 for eight Lewdown seemed the likely winners.
James (20no) and Staddon (36) got the target down to seven to win and two overs to get them in.
In needed a quality yorker from Searle to get rid of Staddon and break the stand.
Ben Williams had to bowl the last over with eight needed to win, which Goodliffe got with two fours – the second flashing through the slips with a ball to go.
Budleigh Salterton, who were level on points with Brixham and Cornwood going into round 11, lost at Bradninch and drop down to third.
Nick Goodliffe, Cornwood’s chairman of selectors, said result elsewhere mean there is everything top play for in the weeks ahead.
“With Budleigh coming unstuck against Bradninch, it means we are now joint top just with Brixham,” he said.
“That now sets up an exciting encounter for us at Budleigh this week.
“We will need to really apply ourselves for that game, as victory could see a healthy gap start to develop at the top.”
