Sidmouth cruise past Bovey into second place

SIDMOUTH went past North Devon into second place in the Premier Division thanks to a five-wicket win at Bovey Tracey.
Bovey Tracey’s total of 190 all out was worth a few more in the conditions – and Sidmouth had to work had to better it.
At 114 four five with free-scoring Jake Fawcett just out for 30 off 26 balls, the game was in the balance.
Sidmouth do have plenty of depth though and sensible batting from Anthony Griffiths (right) and Will Sobczak saw them home without further mishap.
For stand-in captain Peter Randerson, deputising for the absent Will Murray, it was a job well done.
“Bovey is a tough place to go and win - and to chase a competitive score with a few overs to spare is a good result for us,” said Randerson.
“I think Bovey will beat a lot of teams and to beat them twice in a season is a good return for us.”
Sidmouth’s 20-point return puts them eight behind Torquay at the summit.
Jordan Willoughby top scored for Bovey with 61, which he got as the team reached 83 for three.
Matt Golding (34) and Andy Fairbairn (23) put on 56 for the fifth wicket with Charlie Sheen (21) and Sam Hickenbottom (15) notching 33 for the seventh.
Spinners prospered – there were three wickets each for Charlie Miles and Miles Dalton – and Liam Lewis had a second spell at the end that earned him overall figures of three for 34.
Sidmouth’s chase was pretty efficient from start to finish with Harvey Sargent the only batter to fail completely.
Matt Cooke (23) and Lewis (31) made a 45-run dent in the deficit, Fawcett (30) and Randerson (18) chipped away then Griffiths (37no) and Sobczak (38) put on 80 unbroken to win it.
On a good day to be a spinner, Hickenbottom had two for 28 and Golding three for 27.
