ABBOTSKERSWELL need a win over Braunton this Saturday to start pulling away from the B Division basement.
Abbots slipped to third straight defeat last time out when Axminster beat them by seven runs, successfully defending a total of 210 for five.
It was a cracking game of cricket that could have gone either way, not that skipper Morgan Penrice was mollified by that.
“We were so close and while Charlie Hill (88) was in there was a chance of winning,” said Penrice.
“It didn’t help that we lost two wickets in the first over, which gave Axminster momentum from the start.”
Gary Larcombe top scored for Axminster with 62 not out having gone it at the end of a 72-run stand between Matt Pile (51) and Bradley Cross (38).
Larcombe and Pile hoisted 78 for the second wicket.
Hill led the Abbots’ fightback, aided by Penrice with 29.
Four overs out the target was 25 with three wickets in hand. Hill got out and Abbots chance went with him.
