Plymstock underline promotion credentials

PLYMSTOCK underlined their promotion credentials with a 59-run win over Shobrooke Park,

Shobrooke have been up among the front runners for a while and were top two weeks ago before Ipplepen knocked them off.

Plymstock were second after beating Braunton last time out, and there they stay with just six points between them and Ipplepen in top spot.

Plymstock hurtled to 91 without loss in the first 13 overs with Jason Williams and Dom Wood (28) setting the pace with some brutal treatment of the bowlers, in particular Dylan Blignaut.

“Jason and Dom set the platform for others to come in and play aggressively,” said skipper Scott Mansfield.

To see Blignaut go for 32 in his first two overs meant we went off like a rocket.

“Although disappointing that Jason didn't make a a second successive century, I'd take 98 most weeks.”

There were stands of 55 with Mansfield (30), 30 with Jack Horton and 37 with Josh Hocken.

Just when it seemed Williams was on course for a second successive league century, he was stumped for 98 off the bowling of TomYoungman.

James Nicholls finished undefeated on 36 in a Plymstock total of 279 for six.

Shobrooke were well behind the asking rate after 25 overs with matt Blakeney just out in a total of 109 for four.

Chris Ford had already gone for a patient 28 off 73 balls and Chris Simpson was out for 38,

Blignaut (45) and Andrew Codling (36) kept the bonus points coming and Ben Trenaman’s 22 at the end got Shobrooke past 200.

Horton took four for 771 and there were two wickets for debutant seamer Billy Gibson as Shobrooke were dispatched for 218 with more than four overs left.

Mansfield said although it seemed a comfortable win, Plymstock had to be on their toes.

“Chasing 280 to win at Plymstock in times gone would have been well out of reach but this year is very different,” said Mansfield.

“Shobrooke have some aggressive batters so we knew we'd have to bowl and field well.

“Nick Lowe opened up with a spell consisting of five maidens in six overs.

“Two wickets each for Billy Gibson and George Barnicott left Jack Horton to close the innings.”
