Sandford warm up for derby date

SANDFORD warmed up for the derby date with Bradninch by handing out a five-wicket beating to lowly Lewdown.

Lewdown got in trouble early on – they were 30 for four and 54 for five – but recovered with Jack Williams (33) and Tom Pengelly (30) got the score up to 98.

It was bits and pieces after that with Leon Horn, Pengelly and Adrian Edmunds all hanging around. The last two wickets added 32 in a final total of 141 all out.

Prince Masvuare (4-34) led the Sandford bowling effort, aided and abetted by Tom Williams (3-29). Ryan Glass spun away for two for 24.

Sandford were 23 for two in reply, which gave Lewdown hope. But not for long.

A stand of 106 between Masvuare (48) and Adrian Small (49) killed the game dead.

Ben Williams (2-3) and Johann Wessells (2-33) were the primary Lewdown wicket takers.

After the game Jamie Palmer, the Sandford captain, was more concerned about moving up the table than the challenge of Bradninch to come.

“It was an important win that pushes us a good distance from the bottom two,” said Palmer.

“Prince Masvuare was fantastic, knocking over four batsman with the new ball then breaking the back of the run chase in a 100-run partnership with Adrian Small.

“The spinners bowled well too.”
