C Division East - Cole steers B&P to win over Alphington

LEE Cole stroked an unbeaten 69 to set Barnstaple & Pilton on course for a three-wicket win over fading promotion hopefuls Alphington.

Alphington were all out for 185 – James Russell doing much of the damage with a four-for-50 haul.

Russell was backed up with the ball by Brady Saunders (2-28) and skipper Steve Moore (2-12).

Plenty of batters got in – Lee Rowe made 26, Mark Porter 20 and Dave Haysom 32- but no one made more than Ashley Green (33).

A stand of 65 for the second wicket between Haysom and Rowe was as good as it got for Alphington.

Tom Popham (45) and Saunders made a 61-run dent in the deficit.

Cole took B&P the rest of the way there, passing the post in the final over with Paul Schiller at the other end.

Alphington’s best bowling figures were posted by captain Stuart Shaw (3-30).

Barnstaple are away to Kentisbeare on Saturday.

OTTERY St Mary’s lead at the top of the C Division East has been trimmed to 16 points after a defeat by upwardly mobile Uplyme.

Ottery were 30 points ahead a month ago and in danger of running away with the title.

Uplyme have only lost once in the last seven starts and have gone past Alphington and Seaton to reach second place.

Clearly the contest is still going on and another slip up against Clyst Hydon this Saturday will really heat things up.

Adam Caddy top scored for Uplyme with 52 in a total of 200 all out.

Richard O’Halloran (35) and Caddy put on 90 for the second wicket, then Alex Richards chipped in with 30.

Matt Reed (3-31) and Blly Rudolph were the pick of the bowlers for Ottery.

Ottery stated positively with Dan Flower and Billy Rudolph putting on 49.

The middle order failed to fire as Ottery slowed to 64 for five. Kev Kelly (29), skipper Lewis Townsend (31) and Jody Clements (29) got the score up to 161 all out – the last two wickets putting on 33.

Ollie Lee had three for 4 while Steve Batey, O’Halloran and Pat Barraclough had two wickets each.

Townsend, the Ottey captain, said it was important to get back on course at Clyst Hydon this Saturday.

“To be fair to Uplyme, they were the better side on the day,” said Townsend.

“The wicket wasn't the best but they showed good application with the bat and consistently hit their areas with the ball, which made our lives tough.

“It's important for us now to move on and make sure we perform as we have done for the majority of this season.”

FILLEIGH skipper Simon Prideaux said time is running out for his side to dodge relegation after their lost by three runs to visiting Seaton.

Filleigh have spent 12 straight weeks in the bottom two and are 33 points adrift with five games to go.

“It is starting to look a bit dodgy,” said Prideaux.

“I hope we can get a run going before it is too late.”

After holding Seaton to 160 for nine it seemed Filleigh were on course for a rare victory.

Main run getters for Seaton were Mike Wheeler (35no), Jamie Bond (30) and Joel Seward (32).

Despite a battling 75 from Ryan Bowden, Filleigh were bowled out for 157.

Filleigh failed to build on a start that saw them reach 62 for one as Joe Berry (4-50) and Seward (3-32) whittled away at Bowden’s partners.

Bowden went at 148 for seven and the last three wickets followed for just nine runs.

Filliegh’s survival mission takes them to Feniton on Saturday.

SHALDON have to pick themselves up after the one-wicket defeat by Clyst Hydon and get back into the scrap for survival against Alphington.

Clyst tail-enders Graham Trude and Matt Fitt earned Hydon an unlikely win at  Shaldon.

Shaldon made 196 for nine – Dan Woolnough top scoring on 66 not out– then reduced Hydon to 86 for five, 119 for seven and 143 for nine.

The end shouldn’t have been far away at that stage, but last man Trude had other ideas.

The target of 54 to win was a stiff one for the last pair of batters, but they got them with an over and a half to spare.

Fitt made a patient 30 not out while Trude overtook his running mate from a standing start to finish with an unbeaten 36.

Woolnough and Jay Tuffnell (28) rescued Shaldon from an edgy 42 for four after Kevin Sercombe (4-18) got among the wickets early.

Their stand of 89 was complemented by another of 27 for the seventh wicket between Woolnough and skipper Mark Couch.

Clyst opener Ian Sutton made 40 off the first 77 on the board, but he fell to Chris Whitehead (3-36) during a slum from 66 for one to 86 for five.

Lewis (19) and Dhanuja Haturusingha (13) put on 24, but Whitehead broke the stand and Ross Abraham (3-49) kept the pressure on as 110 for five became 127 for eight.

Fitt made some progress with James Billington before Trude arrived to save the day.

Couch said his old Exeter Hornets Hockey Club team-mate Trude was only batting last as he had injured himself in the field.

“They had nothing to lose and Graham threw the bat at everything – even if some of them looked like hockey shots,” said Couch.

“Nine wickets down and more than 50 to get, they should not have won.

“It was one of those things that comes off one out of ten times. It sums up our season.”

Third-place Alphington are on the back of two defeats, which have dented their play-off aspirations.

With second-placed Uplyme the week after, Shaldon face a tough run.

“We have already beaten Alphington once so know it can be done,” said Couch.

“Get Alphington and Uplyme out of the way and our last three games are against teams around us.”
