Baggs back in runs as Exmouth beat Heathcoat

RICHARD Baggs found his run-scoring touch again to help Exmouth beat Heathcoat by 87 runs.

Baggs, who started the season as skipper before handing over to Gary Chappell three weeks ago, has struggled for runs this summer.

He has not reached 50 in the league before Saturday, when he took 75 not out off the Heathcoat attack.

And with Bob Dawson making 58 not out, Exmouth totted up 221 for five – a better score than it looked in difficult conditions on the Knightshayes estate.

“Runs on a Saturday at last,” said Baggs (pictured). It has been a long time coming, but I have felt in better touch recently.

“Hopefully, I can contribute towards a strong end to the season for us.”

Exmouth had been 92 for five when Baggs went out to join Dawson after struggling against Paul Elliot (1-28), Matt Hague (2-43) and Jack Menheneott (1-27).

Heathcoat were all out for 134. There were three wickets each for Marquis Clarke and Chappell, with Ollie Dawe and temporary spinner Trevor Anning taking two each.

Jack Dart top scored with 47 – he was sixth out at 103,ending a stand of 59 with Sam Maunder (18) – and last man Menheneott was next best with 20.

For Chappell it was an emphatic win after two mediocre performances against North Devon and Sidmouth.

“I was very happy considering we were on the wrong end of an important toss as the wicket had wet patches all over it,” said Chappell.

“We dug in well to get in a reasonable position where it looked like a score of 170 was about par and would have been a good effort given the conditions.

“Dawson and Baggs scored 130 in the last 19 overs and batted superbly.

“Our 221 was far too many and we took early wickets which killed the game off.

“Ollie Dawe came back into the side and bowled very well with the new ball in place of Trevor Anning who was injured and could only bowl spin.”

Heathcoat have been up and down all season and this was another down, following the loss to Torquay last week.

Skipper Sam Smith said: “Unfortunately, we have not turned up for the last two weeks in any department.

“The boys are gutted with our last two performances and there is a firm determination to make it right this Saturday at Bovey.”
