BARTON slipped closer to the wrong end of the A Division table after losing by 44 runs to visiting Budleigh Salterton.
Budleigh arrived at Barton on the back of a three-game losing streak so Barton had plenty of reasons to feel optimistic.
Ben Phillips – the Blundell’s schoolboy, not the former Somerset seamer with Budleigh last season as player-coach - top scored for the visitors with 45.
Phillips and Cephas Zhuwao (42) notched 68 for the third wicket which proved Budleigh’s best stand.
There were bits and pieces lower down – the last three wickets added 41 with James Leat (25) to the fore – and 54 extras helped.
Barton skipper Adam Parker will want his seamers to bowl a bit straighter in what’s left of the season after chucking down 38 of the 40 wides given away.
Mark Gilmour (41) and Tom Drake (61) racked up 70 for the after coming together at 18 for two and a running total of 88 for two after 18 overs looked promising.
Gilmour and the dangerous Shaun Needham went in quick succession, but Barton kept chipping away through Drake and Parker to reach 120 for five.
Adrian Hewings was in and out for 20 and when he left Drake had to do what he could with the tail.
Drake finally went at 177 for eight and from there it was downhill to 188 all out.
Leat (3-61) picked off a couple of tail enders, completing the job started by Andy Procter (2-23), Joel Murphy (2-25) and Zhuwao (2-31).
