Derby win keeps Tavvy clear of drop zone

TAVISTOCK won by eight runs at Hatherleigh to stay clear of the A Division drop zone.

Hard-hitting left-hander Dave Manning clubbed 86 off 99 balls – nine fours and three sixes – in a Tavvy total of 224 for nine.

Hatherleigh didn’t have an anchorman like Manning, but many useful contributions got them to 185 for seven with five overs to go. Forty to win in five overs was a tall order, not helped by losing Charlie Nielson (17) without addition.

Home skipper Mark Lake was last man out for a battling 34 with two balls to go and Hatherleigh on 216.

Lewdown’s perhaps predictable defeat by Brixham means they stay second from bottom, 21 points behind Tavvy.

Tavvy aren’t out of the wood yet, but with Barton and Hatherleigh within eight points of them too they aren’t the only ones looking over their shoulders going into the last month of the season.

Manning was last man out for Tavistock having gone in at 33 for two following the demise of Ian Gray (26).

Josh Stephens came and went for four and when Jay Stevens fell to Lake (2-28) and Jamie Stephens was out third ball, Tavvy were an unimpressive 84 for five in the 27th over.

Manning marshalled the bottom half of the order superbly, putting on 52 with J White (31) and 62 for the eighth wicket with Chris Monger.

Monger made 15 in a partnership that occupied just 6.2 overs. Neilson (3-24) was the pick of the bowlers.

Hatherleigh were well placed at 119 for three with Danny Forester (33) out but Chris Jelley (31) and Carl Schwarz (35) going along nicely.

Jamie Stephens (2-23) bowled Jelley, Schwarz fell to Jack Newton (4-52) and when Andy Bennett and Rhys Davies went three balls apart the chasers were 155 for seven.

Lake, with Neilson (17) then tail-enders Rob Cockwill and Rob Fishleigh, had a real good go but South African seamer Jay Stevens (2-29) knocked over the tail and Lake was stumped having a heave in the last over.
