Brixham deal blow to Bradninch's promotion hopes

BRADNINCH can probably forget about promotion for another season after crashing to a 129-run defeat against leaders Brixham

The Kensham Park side had motored up to fourth in the table on a run of four wins in five starts.

Bradninch remain fourth, but the gap between them and second-placed Cornwood has widened to 48 points with 80 to play for.

Unless Bradninch win at Barton this Saturday, they will be out of it mathematically, although the practicality is they probably are now.

Brixham hoisted 300 for five in 50 overs – opener Stuart Edgar top scoring on 118.

Edgar, who hit 11 fours and a six during a 126-ball stay,  got the innings going with a stand of 105 shared with Tim Robinson (56).

Charlie Walker (3-65) bowled Robinson, but there was no let up as South African Matt McGillivray joined Edgar to add another 122.

Dan Hardy (2-35) bowled McGillivray for 56 - the first of three wickets fall in quick succession.

Edgar, Mark Orchard and Andy Pugh were the casualties. Josh Hunt’s 23 off 14 balls in the final two overs brought up the 300.

Ross Acton  (0-31) was the only Bradninch bowler to go for less than three an over.

Bradninch were all out for 161, which was more than looked likely when they were 51 for five after an early duffing up from Craig Eaves (3-58) and McGillivray (2-11).

Luandre van Wyk resisted for 56 in 78 minutes and his stand of 48 with Lawrence Greenway (22) staved off total collapse.

There were chip-ins from Chris Metters (18) and Mark Ashplant (13) before former Devon seamer Mark Orchard (4-26) blew away the stragglers.
