SOUTH Devon skipper Jon Martin has targeted two more wins for survival as the relegation battle in the B Division simmers away.
An 82-run win over near neighbours Abbotskerswell got South Devon going again after a run of defeats and – crucially – out of the bottom three.
There is little room for error on South Devon’s part as they are only four points clear of Axminster (150pts) in the third drop spot with Abbotskerswell (141) and Braunton (136) still in hailing distance.
Martin said South Devon had shown glimpses in recent games of what they can d and finally put enough elements together in the same match to win one.
“Sooner or later it was all going to come together – and not before time,” said Martin.
“Getting out of the bottom three was crucial to us, now we have to stay there.
“This division is so tight we are only 20 points behind Ivybridge, who could still go up.
“Our run in isn’t the easiest – three of the top five sides, then Braunton on the last day – but with improved availability from now on we have nothing to be afraid of.”
That run-in starts with Thorverton this Saturday, who have shot up the table on the back of six straight wins.
Neil Hancock top scored for South Devon with 84 in a 45-over total of 209 for nine at Two Mile Oak.
Key stands for South Devon were Hancock and Ali Wright (22) with 50 then Hancock and Richard Beaumont (29).
Hugo Whitlock (2-22) and Connor Adams (2-36) took wickets. Charlie Hill (seven overs for 13 runs) bowled meanly.
Abbots lost opener Tom Andrew first ball and staggered to 93 for five with Hill (19), Whitlock (17) and Mawgan Penrice (17) getting out before building a score.
The last five wickets went for 34 runs as Abbots folded on 127 all out.
Martin (3-16) led the way with the ball, aided and abetted by Hancock (2-23) nd Sean Day (2-21).
