Pens can't afford another defeat in as promotion race hots up

IPPLEPEN skipper Keith Wakeham hasn’t given up on promotion just yet despite the 40-run defeat at Plymstock.

Three defeats on the trot have dropped Pens to fourth, 30 points behind leaders Chudleigh but only 12 adrift of second-placed Plymstock.

Pens were top after beating South Devon last month, but have struggled for form since then.

A win over Ivybridge this Saturday will keep Pens in it.

“I think we've blown it but win the last three and you never know.

“The momentum is with Thorverton and Chudleigh, but you can't count out Plymstock and Ivybridge. Who knows?”

James Nicholls (67) and Dave Orchard (54) led the batting effort by putting on 100 for the third wicket in a total of 233 for eight.

Influential all-rounder Orchard has been working away recently, but is back for the final month of the season to give Plymstock a timely boost.

Nicholls and Sayed Ali (34no) added another 62 and Jack Horton made a useful 27.

Nick Fairbank had three for 59 for Pens and there were two wickets each for Stevie Bowden and Keith Wakeham.

Pens needed a win after two heavy defeats and gave it all they had for a long time.

Fairbank (74) and Sam deFriend (38) were the main run getters, putting on 81 for the fourth wicket.

Fairbank, who hoisted six sixes, was seventh man out at 173 and only then did Plymstock feel a bit calmer.

Wickets tumbled as Pens were dismissed for 193. Nick Lowe and Ian Whalley had three wickets each. Orchard (2-58) was on the receiving end when Fairbank started swinging.

“There could be few complaints after we failed to keep the momentum at crucial stages of the game,” said Wakeham.

It’s tight at the top with 18 points between Chudleigh and Plymstock, 12 between Plymstock and Thorverton and a gap of four down to Ivybridge, who are two in front of Ipplepen.

“Two more wins should do it and we would like to get them of South Devon and Axminster before we get to Chudleigh in the last game,” said Nicholls.

“It is so tight at the top we really don’t want to need too many points from our last game to be sure of going up.”
