Stoke skip confident 'escape plan' will work

STOKE Gabriel’s version of the ‘Great Escape’ gathered a bit more pace when they beat Ashburton by 37 runs.

Stoke have closed the gap between themselves and safety to six points with two games left to get ahead of Yelverton and stay there.

Coming up next are Babbacombe – a side Stoke defeated by 22 runs when the sides met earlier in the season.

And the season finishes at home to Whitchurch, who need at least one more win themselves do be certain of staying up.

Yelverton have mid-table sides Chagford (H) and Kingsbridge (A) in what promises to be an nail-biting end to the season.

Ashburton are already down and their use of nine bowlers – Jack Churchill and Martin Causey were the odd ones out – suggested they are a little more relaxed about their situation than Stoke are.

Will Coon – two for 22 from nine – had the best figures of the day for Ashes. Dom Durman and Matt Coon took two each.

South African Shane Lewis opened up with 41 for Stoke and was the only batter to survive a going over from Durman and Matt Coon.

When Lewis went at 75 for six the bulk of the remaining runs were scored by Issac Whithington (36) and Neil Robinson (18) in a total of 157 all out.

Ashburton were all out for 120 in reply – Lewis capping a fine game all round with four wickets for 24 runs.

Jack Tolley had three for 33 and Sam Hill picked up two for 24 towards the end.

Opener Russ Lacey made 32 in a running total of 94 for six.

Durman (22) had the only other score of note before Ashes tail faded away.

Ashburton go to Whitchurch this Saturday.

Skipper Tolley misses the game against Babbacombe on Saturday, but has every faith in deputy Seb Ansley bringing back the points.

“Seb and the rest of the team will do the job needed at Babbacombe to set us up for a very unlikely escape from the drop,” said Tolley.
