ALPHINGTON skipper Stuart Shaw knows exactly where it went wrong this season – and what’s needed to put it right.
The Alphas were second in the table at the halfway stage, 27 points behind long-term leaders Ottery, who went on to win the title by a distance.
Shaw felt he had the players in place this season to press for a return to the B Division, but getting them out on the field was a different matter.
“You have to have committed players so you can put out consistent sides,” said Shaw.
“I am convinced had we put out our strongest side more often, we would have won our division.
“Ottery were the best side we played, young, committed and talented. I am not knocking them at all.
“We had a better bowling attack than anyone in our division – ask the other captains – but seldom fielded it.
“Our 2nd XI won their division because the they were settled and committed.
“The 1st XI needs to do the same next year. Everybody deserves a holiday, but I am looking for a commitment to play in at least 15 games.
“If I don’t get enough commitments I will be looking around for some new players.”
Alphington’s final outing of the season was a 64-run win over relegated Kentisbeare.
Dave Haysom (54) and Mark Porter (64) led the way as Alphington made 247 for nine.
Ashley Green (3-20) was the pick of the bowlers as Kents were bowled out for 183, Scott Chappell (53) top scoring.
