THORVERTON defeated Shobrooke Park by 29 runs in the derby date but that wasn’t enough to send them up.
Thors needed Ipplepen and Plymstock to mess up on the final day of the season to let them through – as well as winning themselves.
Plymstock lost to Chudleigh, which cost them promotion. Thorverton couldn’t get past Ipplepen to snatch the vacancy though as Pens took it by beating Axminster.
Having won eight games on the trot to force thier way into the promotion reckoning, Thors’s skipper Graham White was disappointed to miss out by just six points.
And White was left to wonder what might have been had the game against Chudleigh last Saturday gone ahead.
On a day when everyone else in the division got a result game in, Chudleigh’s ground as ruled unfit for play due to bad weather.
“Let’s just say not playing suited Chudleigh far more than it suited us,” said White.
Kobi Griggs (42) and White (17) put on 50 for the third wicket in Thorverton’s total of 188 all out. Paul Fielder (26) and Will Denford (35) chipped in.
There were three wickets each for Shobrooke bowlers Dylan Blignaut (3-34) and Tom Youngman (3-35).
Shobrooke started slowly and never really caught up.
“They seemed content to stop us taking wickets rather than trying to win the game,” said White.
Jon James made 44 and Andrew Codling 26 in Thors’ total of 159 for eight. Jake Choules (3-17) was the pick of the Thorverton bowlers.
