The two teams before their game at Westward Ho!DEVON’S South African tourists launched their fund-raising campaign on Bank Holiday Monday with a match at Bideford.
Devon’s Girls are going to South Africa next Spring and have to cover the costs.
For many of the girls it will be their first experience of touring overseas as a cricket squad.
Bideford offered to stage the match as a fund-raiser and put out a mixed male side against the Girls.
The match was played against a backdrop of threatening clouds after heavy rain overnight placed the match in jeopardy.
Thanks to the outstanding efforts of all at Bideford CC, the match took place with the men scoring 190 for eight in their 40 overs.
The girls responded with 126-8.
Thanks to the efforts of Michael Ball and his team, who ran a barbecue and raffle with prizes donated by local people, club members and the party themselves, nearly £300 was raised.
‘A huge thank you to everyone at Bideford CC for what proved to be an enjoyable day for all,’ said tour organiser Warren Carr.
Fund raising has started in earnest now with other events planned.
They include a charity Golf Day, car boot sales, Christmas shopping evening and, hopefully, a 24-hour ‘batathon’ which the girls will undertake, in addition to bag packing at a superstore.
