Civil told to use correct complaints procedure over play-off

TOLCHARDS Devon League officials are waiting for a formal complaint from Plymouth Civil Service and Roborough before investigating last Saturday’s C Division play-off game against Uplyme.

Civil lost by 115 runs – and are hopping mad about it.

What Civil are annoyed about is being on the receiving end of an unbeaten century from Uplyme batsman John Whetlor, which proved largely the difference between the two sides.

Civil say Whetlor, a former club captain who has been living in Australia, was not eligible to play in the game.

Uplyme skipper Steve Batey said his club checked Whetlor’s eligibility before the game with league officials and were assured he could play.

What Uplyme were told and whether it was the correct response is at the heart of the row that has been brewing ever since the game.

Whetlor is a registered player, but for his registration to be valid for the match he should either have played for Uplyme this season or in three games in 2014.

Civil fixture secretary Darren Bartrop said Whetlor did neither.

‘We believe, he didn’t play at least three games for Uplyme last season, due to the fact, he was playing his cricket in Australia,’ said Bartrop.

‘As a club we believe the league has made a mistake in allowing John Whetlor to participate in the match.’

So far Civil have only raised their concerns on Facebook – and not through the official channels.

Ed Leverton, the league secretary, said he was aware there may be an issue but added Civil needed to raise it through the right channels.

‘This matter was discussed at a league executive meeting (last week) – and we agreed we won’t act on Facebook speculation,’ said Leverton.

‘There is a procedure laid down in the league rules to cover raising complaints and Civil need to use it.”

Civil finished second in the C Division West behind Dartington & Totnes while Uplyme were runners-up to Ottery St Mary in the East.
