Most successful skipper in league history stands down

SIDMOUTH skipper Will Murray – the most successful captain in Devon League history – has left the club with a headache after announcing he is standing down from the job.

Murray took over as captain from Anthony Griffiths for the 2007 season and has led the club to trophy after trophy.

Sidmouth have won the Premier Division five times, the Devon Senior Cup in four separate occasions and the Devon T20 Cup twice.

Sidmouth were named club of the year in 2013 based on marks submitted by umpires.

Torquay, Exmouth and Exeter may have won more titles than Sidmouth, but not under the same captain.

Griffiths, now club secretary, said the 34-year-old seam bowler is going to be a hard act to follow.

“Hardly a season has gone by while Will (pictured) has been captain that Sidmouth haven’t won something,” said Griffiths.

“It will be a challenge finding someone to replace him and it isn’t a decision we will rush into.

“We have a few weeks before our annual meeting and will start sounding people out now.”

Griffiths refused to be drawn into speculating on a possible successor to Murray.

Nick Gingell, a 1st XI regular with captaincy experience under his belt in the 2nd XI, may well figure in the deliberations.

Adam Dibble, the former Somerset staffer released at the end of last season, may also come into contention.

Griffiths said Murray won’t be leaving the club.

“Will is getting married next year and after nine seasons as captain just wants to focus on other things in his life,” said Griffiths.

“I know from my time as captain it is not the Saturday afternoons on the field that take your time up, but all the behind-the-scenes jobs that need doing from Monday to Friday.
