Rudolph tops Ottery batting stats by a distance

OTTERY St Mary celebrated their runaway championship win in the Tolchards Devon League C Division East at their end-of-season awards evening.

The final margin over second-placed Uplyme & Lyme Regis was 49 points, which only underlined Ottery’s superiority in the division.

By the halfway stage Ottey were 27 points clear at the top and even then it was only a case of when rather than if they would win the title.

Ottery will be in the B Division for the first time next season, along with play-off winners Uplyme.

Key men in the promotion push for Ottery were batter Billy Rudolf and bowler Jody Clements.

First team captain Lewis Townsend (pictured left presenting the batting award to Rudolf), said his stats over the season spoke for themselves.

“To score two hundreds and five 50 is a terrific achievement, to score 813 runs at an average of 90 is wonderful and to do all of that at sixteen is truly remarkable,” said Townsend.

It was far from a one-man show, however, with Townsend, Rob Crabb and Dan Flower all registering well in excess of 300 runs for the season.

Bowler of the season Clements took 39 wickets to speed Ottery on their way to the top, including seven for nine against Alphington.

“Jody was fantastic all year – throw him the ball and you knew exactly what you would get,” said his skipper.

Rudolph also featured prominently on the bowling front, returning 26 wickets, including seven for 43 against Kentisbeare. Fellow 16 year old Ollie Reed enjoyed a fine 1st XI debut season, claiming 23 victims.

Matt Reed was fielder of the year and opening bowler Will Harrison (right) clubman of the year.

The 2nd XI, led by Rick Jackson, finished fourth in a competitive division.

Vice-captain Alex Clements was the batter of the season – 618 runs at 56.18 – but there were credible contributions from Joe Henkus (456) and Dan Flower (28).

Tom Hinch with 19 wickets took the bowling award.

“Tom worked so hard in training and brought us real control,” said Clements.

Dan Jeacock, who finished the season opening the batting in the 2nd XI and took 16 wickets with his off-spin, was the club’s most improved player.

Club chairman John Tierney, the former Exmouth and Devon all-rounder, led the 3rd XI to fifth place in their division with a very young team,

Tierney (479) scored the most runs but the batter of the year award went to Richard Kitzinger (left) with 380 runs in relatively few innings, including a maiden league century against Kenn.

Whilst the 3rd XI bowling attack occasionally struggled for line and length, there were some notable performances, with George Mutter performing consistently well and 14 year old Sam Brook claiming 13 wickets to clinch the bowling award.

The awards evening took place at the Tumbling Weir Hotel in Ottery.
