Students stay top despite first defeat

THE Exeter Indoor League Division One title race has been opened up by leaders University suffering a first defeat of the season.

The Students were comprehensively beaten by Shobrooke Park, who still boast a 100 per cent record.

Shobrooke batted first and posted an imposing 124 for four with Jon Pyle (pictured) top scoring with 27 retired and Toby Codd chipping in with 24.

University were restricted to 103 for five in reply. Jock Huxtable led the unsuccessful run chase with a splendid unbeaten 38 and Jon Burden hit 25.

Pyle completed a fine, all-round shift with two wickets for 30 runs from his three overs.

The other top-flight game on the night was not played with Exeter becoming the second Division One side to be unable to raise a team and so Sandford took the full 18 points without bowling a ball in anger.

Division Two leaders Tiverton were in action and so that meant a double-header for Newton St Cyres, who met Bradninch and Countess Wear.

Bradninch would have been pleased with themselves after restricting St Cyres to 89 for five.

Had it not been for a splendid 45 from Usman Manzeer, St Cyres would  have had considerably less.

Will Birley was the most successful of the Bradninch bowlers with two wickets for 18 runs from three overs. Both wickets came from superb catches by Will Greig.

If Bradninch thought they had the job done at the halfway stage then they were mistaken for they were then bowled out for 69!

Joe Moretta was the star of the show for the winners with three wickets for 14 runs from three overs. Greig top scored for Bradninch with 20 and teenager Max Cooper hitting 18.

Countess Wear sprung a surprise by defeating Newton St Cyres by a whopping 54 runs.

Countess Wear were bowled out for 119 with Dave Jarvis hitting 33 and James Bovey 27.  Martin Pearce was the pick of the St Cyres bowlers with three wickets for 21 runs from three overs.

St Cyres were all out for 27 with only Martin Pearce (27), making any impression. John Bendall bowled a superb spell to return figures of three for 13.
