TORQUAY captain Justin Yau believes the real Devon League Premier Division tests lie ahead for his table-topping side, starting with the visit of North Devon to the Recreation Ground this Saturday.
Wins over Plymouth, Exeter and Heathcoat by six-wickets last time out have Torquay 14 points clear at the top of the table.
Heathcoat were behind Torquay, but not any more! The new tenants in second-place are North Devon, who walloped Plymouth last Saturday.
Said Yau: "We are not going to get carried away as it is very early doors and we haven't come across who we think are the 'big three' yet in Exmouth, Sidmouth or North Devon," said Yau.
"We meet those teams in our next four games and we are just looking forward to be very competitive against them.
"They are going to be serious tests and I'm looking forward to seeing how well we stand up to them."
It’s North Devon at the Recreation Ground this Saturday in the first of those games.
“It's a massive game- make no qualms about it,” said Yau.
“North Devon are favourites to win the title for a reason - they have quality all through their line up and we can't wait for what should be a fantastic game.
“We are at a place where mentally we fear no-one and genuinely believe we can beat anyone on our day.
“Statistically, carrying on from last year, we have won seven from our last eight Prem games.
“I hope we can continue to play our positive cricket and keep the momentum going.
“I think we have raised a few eyebrows with the start we've had and we are just enjoying the moment.
“Everyone is loving the cricket on the Saturday and we've never been so happy and together in the camp.”
Torquay have struggled to stay away from the drop zone during their three years back in the top flight.
The difference his season is Torquay have signed some quality players – Ryan Stevenson, Tim Piper and Matt Petherbridge – who have been performing from the word go.
Yau said another factor is the Waller effect – Somerset’s Max Waller that is.
“Max's influence in the team is rubbing off on everyone and he roams around giving it everything as if it's his last ever game,” said Yau.
‘He is a great example to follow and is a born winner.”
New faces in the dressing room mean changed roles for some, or added strength in depth.
“We've got men in the hutch like Joe Thompson who has scored 700 Premier runs in the last two seasons, Nick Watkin who opened for years and Ryan Stevenson, who is a class act with the bat, and none have come close to batting in any game yet this season,” said Yau.
“That is an indication of the strength in depth we have this season.”
North Devon show two changes from the side that beat Plymouth last time out.
Dan Bowser and Craig Overton are not available.
Matt Dart comes in as he has been bowling very well in the 2nd XI, as does Jack Hockin.
