Bridgers' win over South Devon comes at a price

IVYBRIDGE beat South Devon by 25 runs at Filham – but victory came at a high price.

Opening bowler Pete Abraham went off injured after tea and the prognosis isn’t good.

“Pete has broken an arm quite badly and will miss the rest of the season, which put a bit of a dampener on the win,” said skipper Gareth Andrews.

Jeewan deSilva top scored for Ivybridge with 88 not out in a total of 223 for seven which was boosted by 41 extras.

The bulk of the runs came in the last dozen overs when the Sri Lankan all-rounder and George Thompson (19no) put on 92 unbroken.

Earlier, Harry Soloman made 28.

South Devon’s leading wicket takers were Neil Hancock (3-43) and Jon Martin (2-44).

The Bridge were three bowlers down as Jimmy Bullock, Josh Zimmerman and Josh Coker were all absent before Abraham went off.

So to hold South Devon to 124 for three with 12 overs to go and 198 for seven after 45 was quite and achievement.

Sean Day made 52 and ex-Devon captain Hancock 80, but the big-hitting Aussie didn’t have it all his own way.

“Young Abraham Kopparambil bowled a very impressive nine-over spell of leg-spin when Hancock was well set, slowing the run rate nicely,” said Andrews.

All three guys who stepped  up from the 2nd XI - Dave Eadie, Toby Borrow and Paul Veale bowled well and have given me a nice selection problem for this Saturday.”
