CHUDLEIGH defeated previously unbeaten Ipplepen by six wickets in the South Devon derby at Moor Lane to go top of the shop in the B Division.
Pens’ total of 178 for nine always looked on the low side – although it was more than they looked like posting at 85 for seven!
There were no stars in the Chudleigh reply, just solid batting from start to finish as the runs were knocked off with nearly three overs to spare.
Ipplepen made a 31-run start through openers Jack Lewis (15) and Sam deFriend (12), then plumetted to 58 for five as Matt Heather (3-40) and Faisel Khaliq (3-24) got among them.
Aussie newboy Nick Fairbank (42) went in at 77 for six and wth help from the tal got something defendable on the boaad.
Fairbank was the ninth man out having put on 64 for the last two wickets with Jack Wylie (24) and Ashley Harvey.
Ed Foreman (40) and Jack Beer (12) got the first 50 of Chudleigh’s chase out of the way.
Heather (39) and Foreman got the total up to 83 before they were split up.
Dan Britcliffe and Heather got another 46 wiped off as Chudleigh closed in on their total.
Britcliffe and Heather went in the space of five runs, but there was little chance of an Ipplepen comeback.
Sean Newland (14no) and Rob Clarke with a six-boundary knock of 32 not out got Chudleigh over the line in the 43rd over.
Chudleigh finished last season looking like a promotion side – 110 points in their last nine matches -and have started the current one the same way.
But you won’t catch skipper Foreman sticking his neck out predicting a prompt return to the A Division.
“It is too early to tell,” said Foreman.
"I am prepared to wait as long as it takes for promotion, when we are ready we will go up.
“Anyone can beat anyone this year so I doubt promotion contenders will emerge earlier than with three or four weeks of the season to go.”
On the win over Ipplepen, Foreman said: “ We didn't bowl or field well and still managed to keep them to 178 on a 250 pitch.
“Faisel is really hitting his straps at the moment. His confidence is up and so is his pace.
“He is spending the week training with Northamptonshire, which will only improve him.
“Our chase was perfect. Very mature performances from Heather, Britcliffe, Newland and Clarke got us there without giving them a sniff.
“The good news is we can still improve and will be looking to put it all together next week.”
Keith Wakeham, the Ippelpen captain, said he was disappointed rather than despondent about losing.
“Chudleigh played good league cricket,” said Wakeham.
“Attritional isn’t the right word, but they bowled line and length and gave us very little.
“You can see they have been an A Division side for a while –and it was a reminder we have to learn how to play at a level up from where we were last season.”
