ALPHINGTON and Shaldon fought out a nail-biter at Hazeldown Oval and got to the end thinking they had both won!
Alphington made 203 for nine in their 45 overs – and with two balls to go Shaldon were 202 for nine.
Then it got interesting….
Anthony Shepherd ambled in to bowl and delivered a high full toss to last man Chris Whithead – who would be last man in a team of number 11s!
Whitehead swished and ran a single, the ball looped up in the air and went to an Alphington hand.
No one in the Alphington camp at first saw either umpire call ‘no-ball’ – so the celebrations of a dramatic win started instantly.
Shaldon had seen the call and knew they had won thanks to the single and the run for the no-ball.
Alphington were soon brought back down to earth and trooped off suitably gloomy.
“They thought they had won and celebrated accordingly, before they saw the signal from both umpires,” said Shaldon skipper Mark Couch.
“Only one of their players came in the bar afterwards, bought a pint and took it home with him!”
Alphas’ total was constructed round stands of 45 between Neil Murrin (23) and Ian McDonald (38), 80 between McDonald and Dave Haysom (51) and 49 put together by Al Davey (12) and Ashley Green (32).
Pick of the bowlers with four for 20 was Todd Ballman while Carl Woolnough had four more for 34.
Shaldon didn’t look much like winners at 97 for six when Woolnough (25) was dismissed by Stuart Shaw (3-28).
Jay Tuffnell was still there though and bit by bit with Andy Lockyer (30) and Mark Couch (16) the lead was whittled down.
Couch went to one-handed catch with four needed, Tuffnell went almost immediately and Shaldon were very nearly down and out before that dramatic finale.
FILLEIGH slipped up against Feniton who bowled them out for 110 to win by 85 runs.
Canadian Adam Ramcharran made 85 not out after going in at 29 for two to help Feniton make 205 all out.
Mark Kingdon made 28 and Feniton were helped no end by 43 extras.
Alan Sullivan had three for 19 and Ryan Bowden two for 33.
Filleigh were making great progress at 62 for six with Mark Mbfona chipping in with 26.
Sixty-eight for six was a different story and with Fran Pyle taking five for 17 and Ramcharran two for 25 the end wasn’t far away for Filleigh.
BARNSTAPLE & Pilton cashed in against Kentisbeare, running out seven-wicket winners with time on their hands.
Alex Norman (34) and Rory Thomas (39) were the leading run getters for Kents, who may have hoped for a few more having been 80 for two at halfway.
There were three wickets each for Paul Schiller (3-23) and Brady Saunders (3-21) and two for the evergreen Steve Moore.
Tom Popham made an unbeaten 81 as Barnstaple knocked off the runs in the 38th over.
Popham and Saunders (32) put on 85 for the third wicket to put the game beyond Kentisbeare.
UPLYME beat Seaton by 43 runs in the derby clash at Lyme Road.
Uplyme recovered from 14 for four to make 161 all out – Mark Batey hitting 90.
Pick of the bowlers with three for 23 was Joel Seward.
Seaton were all out for 118 in reply –Seward top scoring on 44.
There were three wickets for Rory O’Halloran (3-19) and two each for Paddy Barraclough and Rhys Davies.
CLYST Hydon became the latest team to fall by the wayside against Ottery St Mary, who made if five out of five at the top with a six-wicket win.
Gareth Davies top score for Hydon with 63 in a total of 181 for eight.
Will Harrison (3-38) and Ollie Reed (2-25) had Hydon wobbling at 73 for four before Davies and George Pawley got a grip.
Pawley made 27 in a stand of 60 that got Hydon going – and when he went Matt Fitt shored an end up in a stand of 40 with Davies.,
Ottery knocked off the runs with 15 overs to spare, led home by youngster Billy Rudolph with 83.
Rob Crabb (41) and Rudolph wiped off 102 for the second wicket in a stand that meant there was only going to be one outcome.
Dhanuja Haturusingha had two for 17 for Clyst and Ian Sutton’s seldom-seen leg-spinners brought him two for 19.
Clyst Hydon are away to Alphington this Saturday.
