Geering blasts dozy fielding after Barton defeat

LEWDOWN are one place clear of the A Division relegation area following a four-wicket defeat at Barton.

For skipper Harry Geering it was one that got away as his side had Barton under the cosh but failed to kill them off.

Having been bowled out for 155 in their 37th over – Tallan Burns (28) and Mark Jordan (21) the only scorers of note – Barton were reduced to 62 for six in reply.

Aqeel Ahmed and Adrian Hewings got Barton off the hook by putting on 96 unbroken to win the match.

“Neither team batted that well,” said Geering.

“We bowled better, but our fielding was awful and when you have a side 51 for five and 62 for six you should finish them off.

“We were asleep in the field and gave them life after life, which ultimately cost us the game.

“I was very disappointed with the concentration and attitude in the field.

“Hopefully, the feeling everyone had after the game, having chucked it away,  will ensure we don't do that again.”

Lewdown’s best stand of the match was their last one – a tenth-wicket partnership of 25 between Burns and Nick Smith.

Mark Gilmour (3-25) did the early damage while Ben Holmes got dangerman Johan Wessels fourth ball.

Ahmed (3-34) got into the middle order with Adam Parker (2-29) chipping in.

Barton lost Shaun Needham to Wessels’ third ball and slid to 51 for five when Hewings went in.

Ahmed arrived when Steve Lewis departed for 18 and his 63 off 61 balls proved crucial. Hewings finished undefeated on 31,
