JACKSON Thompson turned in a match-winning performance with bat and ball as A Division leaders Cornwood eased to a seven-wicket win over Sandford.
Thompson’s first contribution was a four for 44 bowling haul as Sandford were held to 196 for eight – Adrian Small top scoring on 36.
Opener Thompson batted through for an unbeaten 114 as Cornwood dodged the threat of rain to win with more than 10 overs to go.
“Key moments in the match didn't go our way and ultimately cost us dearly,” said Sandford skipper Jamie Palmer.
“I was pleased with the way we batted for the first 35 overs setting up a great platform.
“We were ideally placed at 150 for three when we lost three wickets in an over.
“We felt we had Jackson Thompson fairly plumb in the second over but that's cricket.
Jackson is always going to do this two or three times a season and take the game away from a team. Unfortunately it was us this week,
Russ Discombe (28) and Ryan Glass (24) got Sandford off to a 60-run start.
Matt Butterworth broke the partnership by removing Glass then Matt Skeemer accounted for Discombe.
Prince Masvuare (24) and Small added 56 for the third wicket in the only stand of note in the innings.
Skeemer, Butterworth and in particular Hall kept a lid on the batting. Only Rory Millar made much headway – and his 27 came off 71 balls.
Thompson and Ben Warren (21) pointed Cornwod in the right direction with a steady 78 to open up.
Mark Horwell (20) was Thompson’s running mate for the next 43.
After Chris Parker went cheaply to Glass, the last 53 were knocked off by Thompson and Skeemer.
Amid the wreckage of Sandford’s defeat, Palmer said there were pluses, notably the performance of 15-year-old left-armer Tom Williams on his debut.
“The control and maturity he showed was fantastic,” said Palmer.
“I threw him in at the deep end when Thompson was smacking it everywhere and he was the only one who managed to keep him quiet.”
