Barton increase pressure on Bradninch

BRADNINCH are still rattling around in the A Division bottom two following a four-wicket reversal against Barton.

Chris Metters made a top score of 68 as Bradninch made 180 all out with nine balls of their 50 overs to go.

Barton knocked off the runs with a dozen overs to spare – skipper Adam Parker making a valuable 45 to see them to victory.

Bradninch are one off the bottom of the A Division table and need a win against Lewdown this Saturday to start climbing the table.

Former captain Tim Piper, back at Kensham Park after a brief dalliance with Torquay, made 11 on his debut third time around for the Ninch.

Piper, Dan Hardy, Charlie Walker and Mark Ashplant were all back in the hutch as Bradninch struggled to 39 for four.

Metters and Luandre van Wyk held the middle order together with a stand worth 55 before van Wyk was caught and bowled by Aqeel Ahmed (2-36).

Metters took runs where he could with the bottom half of the order before he was ninth out at 178.

Barton shared the wickets around with Tom Porter (2-19) and Ben Holmes (2-15) as cheap as anyone.

Ross Acton cleaned up Barton opener Will Grainger in the first over, but Shaun Needham (34) and Chris Penner (21) made a 60-run dent in the deficit.

Walker the Acton (3-44) accounted for Needham and Penner respectively as 623 for one become 76 for three.

Parker and Tom Drake (23) wiped off another 61 and it looked like game over.

Van Wyke removed Drake and Tom Gilmour in quick succession then Acton snared Parker lbw to leave Barton 149 for six and Bradninch back in the game.

Ahmed (10no) and Adrian Hewings (22no) ensured no more slips as Barton eased to victory.

Bradninch skipper Hardy said a few more runs would have made it a far closer contest.

“We didn't score enough runs,” said Hardy. “We were probably 30-40 behind par and its showed in their innings.

“Metters batted really well but lacked the support of one other player to really be able to kick on.

“We bowled well and I think with 30 more runs it would have been really tight.”
