Exeter and North Devon bring in teenage keepers

EXETER are poised to give a debut to South African keeper-batter Lorenzo Machado in the game against third-placed North Devon.

The County Ground side started the season without an overseas player but skipper Miles Lenygon hinted then he had someone up his sleeve.

Machado, who is 17, has played youth cricket for Gauteng. He holds a Portuguese passport and will play under the EU qualification rules.

Devon all-rounde3r Ben green comes in and Tom Viljoen comes in to bat and offer a spin option.

North Devon are without Ed Yeo due to injury, which allows skipper Barney Huxtable a rejig.

Huxtable has an changed role in mind for veteran keeper-batter Rob Ayre, which he can now put into practice.

Dan daCosta, a 15-year-old South African keeper studying at Shebbear College comes in, freeing Ayre to focus on batting.

“Rob will play as a batsmen and cover what Yeo does in the middle order,” said Huxtable.

“He has been batting very well for us recently and is also struggling with bruised fingers.

We have da Costa for a few more weeks so, while Yeo is out injured, we have decided to give him a crack at 1st XI cricket

“That will give Rob a break to concentrate on scoring runs in the middle order.

Dan da Costa is an under-15 from Western Province and apparently he is very highly rated in Cape Town.

“After training this week I can see why.”

Exeter have not had the best of starts this season, but Huxtable won’t be underestimating them.

“Exeter are a good side and don't deserve to be down the bottom end of the table, but it's still very early days.

“If we play the cricket we are good enough to play I am confident we can come away with another win.

“But we will have to be on top form if we are to take a win from this game.”
