Budleigh skipper unhappy with school fixture clash of priorities

BUDLEIGH Salterton skipper Lloyd White is feeling a little bit teasy about the absence of his schoolboy cricketers

Opening bowler Joe Gore is missing as he is required for a school game.

Gore isn’t the only schoolboy ruled out this weekend and White (pictured) is beginning to wonder what the lads gain from playing school matches.

“At Budleigh we have eight or nine kids who play school cricket on Saturdays.

“I feel the schools are only stunting their development as cricketers by not releasing them to play adult cricket for their clubs on a Saturday.

What would benefit a young cricketer more? Bowling and batting against proven senior players at men's A Division or Premier level and learning what it means to represent a club - or dominating some kids’ school match.”

“We have no power over the schools team sections and respect their decisions.”

Rob Craze has finished the university term and returned to Cambridgeshire to play for Waresley.

In come two debutants –left-arm seamer Sid Fereday and batsman Gwynn Parks.

“Both have shown their talent and potential in training and for the seconds early season and this week is a great opportunity for them to showcase that in the first team.”

Team news from winless Bideford is that batsman Will Barratt is back from London for the weekend and replaces Tom Brend

That’s the only change from a disappointing defeat at Lewdown.

“The obvious thing we need to do is get runs on the board to give ourselves a chance” said skipper James Ford.

“I am sure a result will come sooner rather than later.”

CORNWOOD will be looking to bounce back from their defeat by Hatherleigh when they host Tavistock.

It’s not exactly a derby game, but isn’t far away from one and the rivalry will be keen.

Tavistock have Tim Pope back, but lose Aaron Churchill early on due to injury.

Keeper-batter Dave Manning is playing after missing last week with an injury.

Andy Hele is away this week so Barton welcome back Stuart Bowker who will give them an extra spin option.

Barton are up to third in the table and aiming to stay where they are.

“We will be looking to continue improving and concentrating on doing the simple things right,” said skipper Adam Parker.

“if we do this we will have a good chance of taking a positive result away from the game.”

SANDFORD are four places off the bottom going into their game with Barton this Saturday, with nine points between them and the relegation zone.
